Ghillie suits????

A few yrs back, I bought a [lightweight Waterfowler's ghili suit] from Cabela's. The color is "Field camo" which is multi shades of tan.

The suit is a lightweight "airey" mesh with the camo strips sewn on. It is [cool, not hot] to wear on a sunny hot day. Provided, your wearing lightweight clothing underneath].

I like the color as it blends in very well, with Fall time grass's & harvested crop fields. A few yrs back, I was sitting on a high mound of dirt over looking a timbered valley below. I called a doe, within 6' of me. On this mound was tall thin dried grass.

I'd call her real close with a fawn bleat from my PEE-WEE open reed. She would stand there facing me snorting & frothing & stomping the ground.

I would wait until she headed back towards the timber below, then I'd bleat again, here she would come right back again, snorting & stomping the ground in front of me. Priceless /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm from Mississippi where Bubba J's are all walking through the woods with a rifle in one hand, spam mayonnaise sammich in the other and a bottle 'o' beer on a lanyard around the neck.... I have to be careful about where i wear it...lol
 
The boy and I getting ready to head out. This is what I call a halfbreed. It is a poncho with a hood (that I hate). The boy is wearing a boonie.

Hoods suck. A nightmare to hang and sew netting, and they take a lot of garnish. They also cut WAY down on what you can hear. A blouse and boonie is the way to go, hands down. Unless a guy wants a bushrag, which is cheap, easy, takes a lot less time, and is probably best for a hunter.
 
I started by using tips here to build this:

Then didn't like the itch/shed of the burlap strips, so I built this out of camo fleece:

The fleece is exactly what you think it would be: HOT. Never have used it as when it is cold enough here to stand being in it there's snow everywhere, so wrong camo pattern.

So what do I use? This, from PM sponsor APC:

I agree with what others have said regarding just using a top and a boonie base. Called in one in that last photo above to 10 yards or so behind me. He didn't know where I was visually . . . could smell me though.

Both projects were fun and I learned a few things along the way. It would have been much easier and cheaper to just buy the APC ghillie up front. It is quiet, not hot, and big enough to put over layers. I even built my face mask from the bag it comes in.

I just received a flyer from "Cheaper Than Dirt" and they had some Ghillie`s in it. They looked good in the picture but don`t know anything else about them.
 
i use a piece of the camo mesh that i chopped up with a pair of scissors and my regular camo under it for turkey and deer and had a coyote come within 10 yrds of me during turkey season this year and needless to say he wont be doing it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
im going to make a snow camo one out of white netting.if i can find the netting for kids hockey nets ill get started on it and post pics
 
i ordered 1" nylon netting & the material known as jute, which is what the military snippers make their jungle tux's out of,the commercially made suits will work & you should get 1 to see how their made but if you have the patience & a little time i suggest you purchase the material to make your own, the best site ive found is ghilliesuitwarehouse.com they are a wealth of knowlege & will point you in the right direction, they also have complete suits if you prefer to go that route, hope this helps you in your search.
 
Great photos, AP. I do know that the next time I need a Ghillie I hope I have $69.95 in my pocket for an APC suit. Considering how labor intensive making a Ghillie is, that is a GREAT price.

I've seen that it doesn't really make that much difference what the terrain or background is like when wearing mine.

My Rancho Safari is pretty dark green. It's a contrast to the desert surroundings here, but there's a few dark green bushes & yuccas, etc. here as well. I just look like one of those....

I imagine the "desert" pattern would work good in sage as well. I have one of those ghillies from APC like he pictured, & killed lots of coyotes wearing it.
