Gimme the scatter gun! I'm tired of this!

doggin coyotes

I've been having what I consider better than average results so far this year calling the coyotes in. The whole problem seems to be killing em! Most of them so far have been the hard chargers, the ones that come in full tilt right up to the caller, figure out they've been had and are gone in the blink of an eye. Three times this morning I had that happen! Not one single shot fired. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif A voice bark don't stop em, a whistle don't stop em, nothing I have tried stops em. Yeah, yeah I know a bullet will stop em. But I'm gettin old and I just can't get on those runnin coyotes like I use to. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
So anyways I'm seriously considering packing the Rem 1100 loaded with #4 buck. I KNOW I could of killed 2 of those coyotes this morning with a shotgun. I have used a shotgun now and then in the past, but I always felt a little bit like I was cheating or something. Just didn't feel right. lol. Hard to explain. I don't feel a need or urgency to kill EVERY coyote I call in, but I sure like to kill a few!
Just venting.

I went out for the first time with my savage model 24 combination gun, .223 over 20ga. on Friday, called for about 30 seconds and two coyotes came charging in, waited til they got about 25 yards rolled the first one with the shotgun, other one ran up the hillside and stopped at about 75 yards flipped the switch to rifle and flopped him to,I think that gun and me are going to have a lot of fun together this year.

Yo dog, shotguns are the shizzle! Don't ask what just got into me, the gangsta just came out. Seriously, they are the thing for those situations you described. I had the same thing happen several times last year and didn't fire a round. One was a monster coyote I called King Kong Coyote, an absolutely huge coyote. I really regret loosing that one. With the Benelli he'd have been fur on the ground.

Scatter guns are where it's at for close up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Just don't shoot your e-caller. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Pack 'em both, keep the shotgun in your lap and the rifle alongside. That way you can roll 'em in close with the scattergun, and bust the runners with the rifle... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Last year I had a lot of chargers, in and out, no shots fired. So I bought a Beretta Xtrema II / Kick off for the mesquites. Man, I hate shotgun recoil, but this one is a piece of cake. First time out sitting at the stand with my new shotgun two coyotes started in, stopped at about 100 yds and just milled around. I have got several since, but about half the time when you have the shotgun you need the rifle, and vice versa. You really need a pardner one with a rifle and the other with a shotgun. The Savage 24F is also a very good idea.

The exact same things have happened to me. They always want to show up at 10 yards hunting the Socal deserts.

I now use a red dot sighted carbine (Mini-14 or AR15). It is the perfect solution for me. I can confidently take them from 0-150 yards. The shotgun can not do that. Too limited.

I live near a no rifle/pistol area that exists to protect some birds of prey area. You can still do some great coyote hunting with the shotgun there. #4 buck is what I'd use.
