Glock 21 VS. 1911

I own both and several of each I might add. I have a Glock 21,G30SF and a Glock 36.

I have Wilson Combat,Springfield,Kimber,Colt and Rock Island 1911's.

The 1911's are all fun to shoot and feel good in the hand but all have had function issues of one kind or another if not babied in some way.

My choice for defense will always be the Glock. The Glock is not sexy nor does it have any WWII movie nostalgia. It is accurate and safe and goes bang each and every time the trigger is pulled. Clean or dirty the Glock will fire. Lubed or dry and full of dirt the Glock still fires. The G21 carries 6 more rounds than the 1911. Drop a Glock mag onto a rock and it will still function.

I left a fully loaded Glock 22 in my truck console for over three years. I finally decided I should get it out and clean it. All it needed was to be dusted off. No rust and it was even a Georgia State trooper trade in that had much of the finish worn off. I fired all 16 rounds into a 3 inch circle at 15 yards. SInce there was no rust inside or out I just loaded it back up and put it back in the console.

Since most everybody else has offered up opinions other than asked by the OP I will throw out my favorite carry gun. It is a Glock 23 loaded up with 155 grain Hornady XTP +P's. Slim, light, lots of firepower, deadly accurate and most of all, life saving dependability.

Meat Hunter I understand what you are saying and can agree with it to some extent. However, lets not forget that it might depend upon the type 1911 you choose. In the U.S. Army trials the Browning design fired over 6,000 rounds without a malfunction of any sort and zero parts breakages. When the gun got too hot to hold, they simply dunked it in a bucket of water, pulled it out and shook the excess off with no cleaning of any sort and then slammed in another magazine and let 'er rip again. That's a pretty darned good track record. Along with the fact there are plenty of dead Germans, Japs, Koreans, VC, Taliban, and countless bad guys here in the states that can attest to how effective a combat handgun the 1911 .45 ACP is. Don't count a good 1911 out of the fight.

Strictly for SD a Glock has a lot going for it and I'd probably take one over a 1911 in a heartbeat. That is "strictly" speaking. But for me there are dozens of reasons I own and shoot my guns and none of them are strictly for SD and the Glock falls short in most of the other reasons. In other words, I won't own a Glock.

Just stating my pick of the two. I carry a Springfield xd-sc 40 and own 2 1911's.

I have heard all these stories about the 1911's reliability as well GC. My statements are based solely on my personal experiences and witnessing many 1911 malfunctions at matches and at the range. I never said they were not good guns. I own 5 of them and dearly love them all. They are just not 100% reliable except for one. I have a lot of money in my collection too. Maybe my $2700 Wilson is not a good design. Too much oil and it won't feed. Possibly the $1800 Gold Cup is flawed. Gold Cup won't fire a hundred rounds without something not working right. The most unreliable 1911 I have is a $1300 Kimber. When it shoots though it is accurate. My Springfield is supposed to be Mil spec but it will FTF bad if it has the wrong mag in it. Even though the mag came with the gun new and it is supposed to be Mil Spec. Springer needs Chip McCormick mags to function and even then it will fail to feed on occaision. The Rock Island is the most dependable. Never had one issue whatsoever with firing. I reckon the RIA design must be like the one that shot 6k rounds without a problem. Dang fine little gun. BUT even the Rock Island only holds 7 + 1 rounds. Glock 21 holds 13 + 1. Advantage Glock.

A Sd pistol is a tool. How it looks, how it feels how it anything takes 2nd place to how it works. I don't need it to be sexy, I need it to take the worst abuse I can throw at it and come up shooting.

I carried a g23 on duty for years when I had my choice of anything in my case. After a few years our dept. got a grant to issue weapons of their choice, after a bunch of testing we got a large shipment of g35 and price was 0 issue. The 23 became my to and from work pistol, the 35 my duty pistol. I shot the 35 a touch better, the 23 was an easier carry under a jacket. I shot expert with both and stayed current with both.

For a "carry" pistol I'll go glock and leave my 1911 at home. For a "conceal" pistol, not so much. For a pocket pistol, I'm not built like andre the giant. But the 1911 doesn't conceal on me either

My glocks have been 100% through tons of ammo. My 1911 I like an awful lot, isn't even close.

I thought your reply was funny. I was just hacking on you. Thanks for the input.

I carry a G22 on duty, own a G30 which I carry as a backup and sleep with a G20. The 20 and 30 will never leave me, I will probably be buried with them. I shoot them all very well and never failed to shoot expert from the academy on.

While doing a PM on my gun in the academy after several thousand rounds, the armorer found a pin inside had been broken in 3 places, yet the gun never had a failure. That same gun now has around 25,000 rounds and has never had a failure. The bluing is wearing off and she is not the best looking girl at the dance but she is a great gun.

All that being said, if given the choice for what I would carry on duty, it would be a 1911. This has more to do with personal preference than any other reason.

I recently purchased a Sig 1911 Nitron that has fed everything I have given it without any complaints. It is a full size and it has become my off duty carry gun, replacing the G30. The 1911, though longer, is thinner and I think that helps a ton in concealability.

It was meant to be funny, I am glad it worked.

I got out today and shot my new used Glock 21. WOW! I didn't have much time and only shot a couple of hundred rounds. It didn't miss a beat and was accurate as [beeep].

I like it. Thanks for the input.

I own both the Glock and 1911. My 1911 is the one I carry. It fits in my hand better, trigger is much better and I can shoot it more accurately. As far as either one having any issues at this time, none. Glock as 1002 rounds through it and my 1911 has 1362 or 1363. I use factory ammo in the Glock and reload for the 1911. Most people that have problems with the 1911 are due to how they grip the weapon, not fully seating the magazine and using not so good reloads.

Lots of answers and most of the time it comes down to personal preference and what you shoot the best.

I carry a compact 1911 everyday, sold my G19. Sometime I’ll buy another Glock or MP but for right now the 1911 does everything I want it to do.
