Good start of the coyote 2022/2023 season.

On Monday a rancher friend of mine called and said he wanted us to try and kill some coyotes because he found a coyote eating one of his little calves.

This morning we got a early start and were set up ready to start calling at first light.

We blanked on the first 3 stands but we heard some coyotes about two miles away, so we headed that direction and made another stand with no success.

We went about 3/4 of a mile and made another stand in some Oak trees so we were in the shade of trees and calling down a steep canyon towards were we heard the coyotes earlier. JP7mag and I both had shotguns and were about 20 yards apart with my Foxpro between us but about 15 yards down away from us.

I started out using Adult Rat Distress sound for about 5 minutes and then switched to Bay Bee Cottontail. At about 12 minutes of calling I switched to Pup Distress 3 sound and about two minutes later I spotted a big coyote standing in the shade about 40 yards away. One shot with 1-1/4 oz of TSS #4 shot dropped him stone dead.

A few minutes late I switched to High Pitch Pup sound and 3 or 4 minutes later I saw a coyote coming up through the Oak Trees and it stopped about 30 yards away from me but all I could see though the trees was part of his head and his hind legs.

Just a few seconds later JP7mag dropped that coyote with his shotgun and we saw another coyote running off back down the canyon.

Both of these coyotes were big male coyotes for around here. It worked out good. JP7mag couldn't see the coyote I shot and he shot the coyote I didn't have a good shot on.

We normally don't start calling coyotes until October or November but it felt pretty good to get out there and give it a try. We made 3 more calling stands with no luck and then headed home.

Good work there! Been hot and dry here but went out this past Sunday late afternoon cool spell and called in a young male using Cagey Cottontail. Went back to same area same time on Monday afternoon and scored again, older female this time. I take cell phone pictures but don't know how to post them on websites. I'm waiting for rain and cooler weather so I can get after hogs again.

That is some awesome looking country.
We've had a few cool mornings here and the coyotes have gotten more vocal at dusk, since the full moon a couple of nights ago. The itch is gonna need scratched pretty soon, I think.
Keep those stories and pics coming.

Good work on the double! It's definitely time to get started. I usually wait until prime fur, but there's no need now as nothings saleable. Game on!

Same here, hoping to start a bit early this season! Great post, looking forward to seeing more of your still shots!!! Love the scenery there, looks like you could get some pretty awesome Coyote footage!

Thanks for all of the great replies gentlemen!

We didn't see much fresh coyote scat in the roads. We have gone two years now without much rain, so I think it is going to be a below average year around here.

I always like your hunts. When I drive down I-5 from WA on our way to NM I always look at the hills to the west of the interstate and would love to hunt coyotes there.

Good start.

We've had enough rain that it is going to be tough to see them coming in in some places, spots that were gravel and greasewood now has knee high grass mixed in.

Thanks for sharing, glad to see one of the old school masters still active here. You experienced members that have done it for decades taught me a lot over the last 15-20 years. Keep the stories coming please.
