Goodbye Rick Perry

I think Bachmann will also drop out now that reality has set in. Paul will lose the Democrat votes from Iowa where they signed up as Repubs at the last minute to skew his numbers upward, as N.H. doesn't allow last minute defections, his percentage will drop there. The herd is being thinned.

Rick Perry to "reassess" campaign
By Lucy Madison
Updated: 12:51 a.m. ET

After a disappointing fifth-place finish in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, Texas Governor Rick Perry said he is going home to Texas to assess "whether there is a path forward for myself in this race."

"With the voters' decision tonight in Iowa, I've decided to return to Texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus, determine whether there is a path forward for myself in this race," Perry told supporters at the end of the night.

The candidate, once considered a frontrunner in the race for the GOP nomination, earned just 10 percent on Tuesday's contest with more than 90 percent of the votes counted.

"With a little prayer and reflection I'm gonna decide the best path forward," Perry said.

"But I wanna tell you, there has been no greater joy in my life than to be able to share with the people of Iowa and of this country that there is a model to take this country forward and it is in the great state of Texas," he added.

The candidate is still slated to participate in two upcoming Republican debates, but has canceled three days of events in South Carolina. Spokesman Ray Sullivan said the Perry campaign would make no announcements about the future until Thursday at the earliest.

I would have thought Perry would hold out until after South Carolina. I guess money is always a factor. Gingrich has a big lead in the state but the potential exists for another candidate to do well.

Bachmann is out, she cancelled her SC trip, scheduled a press conference for 11 am. Huntsman spent almost no time in Iowa and chose to go to NH early. He will not do well in NH and should go back to Utah by the end of next week. Gingrich has never been able to get an organization put together and is not on the VA ballot, has money problems, expect him to fold by the end of next week also. Santorum pulled off a virtual tie by sheer guts and weeks of stumping all the cornfields in Iowa. He will get a bounce due to this tie but won't have time to do the same in NH. Romney and Paul have supposedly bought all the available prime time ad slots in NH, so Santorum will not be able to compete in that arena even if he starts getting donations. I suspect his momentum will help in NH however. Paul's time in the spotlight will dwindle and the only way he will maintain his distant third spot will be if there are only three candidates.

At the Paul speech after Iowa Rand looked to be very angry, guess he believed the much hyped polls. Guess the reality bit him pretty hard and he didn't buy Ron's spiel that his showing was nothing to be ashamed of. That's ok Rand, I don't buy it either.

It's a two man race now, Romney and Newt, with a quirky loon hanging on to poke the country in the eye later as an independant.

Ain't this the truth. I reckon it will make a few people feel all warm and fuzzy to vote for Paul as an independant. Be bout like the Ross Perot crap 20 years ago. He will steal votes from the Republicans only to get BHO another four years to finish us off.

He's looking to gain Bachmann supporters but too little too late. Perry would probably make a decent POTUS but it just ain't gonna happen. Romney's money and organization will eventually wear down Newt and Willard be the nominee. He should beat Zero (in spite of McAmnesty's endorsement) unless RP goes the traitorous spoiler route...

So dems can boost RP's numbers and then bail? Is it safe to say they could be doing the same thing to Romney's, since everyone except you few members of this forum seem to understand he stands no chance of beating Obama...

Wait till the Obama campaign points out how much international conflict could be on our plate in the next 4 years with this plan: Mitt's grand ideas

I'll point out some key sections.

Broad Plans: "It is only American power—conceived in the broadest terms—that can provide the foundation for an international system that ensures the security and prosperity of the United States and our friends and allies."

Everyone knows how wildly popular we are around the world because of only looking out for our own interests...

"While America should work with others to advance our interests and values, America will always reserve the right to act alone to protect our vital interests."

I can sum that up: "We do what we want when we want to"

In regards to Iran: "In his first 100 days, make clear that the military option is on the table by ordering the regular presence of an aircraft carrier task force in both the Eastern Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf region simultaneously."

Sure, lets tempt military action. Our country's economy can take another war.

In regards to China: "Maintain robust military capabilities in the Pacific."

Yes, let's increase our military presence to control an upcoming super-power with the ability to destroy crucial war-fighting implements, such as oh I don't know. Our aircraft carriers???

Don't believe me? Enjoy

In regards to North Korea: "Mitt Romney will commit to eliminating North Korea’s nuclear weapons and its nuclear-weapons infrastructure." "Work to persuade China to commit to North Korea’s disarmament. Mitt Romney will discuss with China how the international community will address the humanitarian and security issues that will arise should North Korea disintegrate."

So we're going to convince a country to help disarm its ally, while simultaneously threatening it?

In regards to Syria: "Romney believes the United States should pursue a strategy of isolating and pressuring the regime to increase likelihood of a peaceful transition to a legitimate government." & "the United States and our allies will support the Syrian opposition when the time comes for them to forge a post-Assad government"

So we're going to join in just like we did in Libya? Gosh we saw some support for that.

In regards to Russia: "Pursue policies to reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian sources of energy. He will explore increasing technical assistance to the Eastern European nations currently developing the Turkey-to-Austria Nabucco natural gas pipeline and work with the private sector to spur access to untapped shale energy resources in Western Europe."

So we're going to undermine Russia's economy? If we were in their shoes, we'd wage war "to protect our interests".

Just wait till the media lays into each one of these "great ideas". You will see support for Romney drop like a rock when it comes to the crucial middle-ground voters. Just my 2 cents. Heck, what do I know though.

I'm sure this post will be missed by most though, so you may see it again.

You're right Dawg, I actually believe Santorum will get more of Bachmann's supporters than will Perry. As long as Romney can convince voters that he will not follow the treasonous path laid out by zero and Paul of ignoring world perils, he will spank zero badly.

A reporter ask Paul the other day if he really believed he would ever be in the oval office. His reply was "not really". So obviously at some time or another he has a moment of lucidity. I don't see him running third party since he knows he will never be in the oval office, coupled with the fact that he would also destroy Rand's career.

As an aside, we've seen the wives of all the candidates except Paul on the campaign trail with their husbands. Heck we even saw that creepy husband of Bachmann. So where is Mrs. Paul? Maybe she's voting for Perry. She probably believes her husbands head in the sand and conspiracy theories are embarrassing.

I really don't have much heartburn with Mitt's positions that have been posted. We need to have a strong deterrent for these crazy regimes to realize we mean business.

I'm not in favor of sending troops all over the world for this and that...we can't afford that, and frankly if a nation can't handle it's affairs, then it's not deserving of 1 drop of spilled US GI blood...even the French had a revolution for crying out loud.... but if somebody ___ks with us, I say blow them back to the stone age and say " next"??? We will have more friends than we will know what to do with in 3 days..

We will always be hated because we are on top, that's basic human nature and will never change. If I was king, you could hate me all you want, but you would respect me to the point that if you thought about terrorizing US citizens, you would be peeing down your leg, because you KNOW that retribution will be swift and extreme.

THATS what we need, not appeasement, imo

RP is not going to go independent. Although he should after all the "Fair and balanced" coverage. So take the bees out of your bonnets and reflect on how pathetic the Republican party looks.

Perry has totally disgraced the state of Texas. CNN was mocking how he spent nearly $5,000,000 in Iowa. Statistically, the worst campaign in the caucus history. To top it off the idiot doesn't know when to quit and is continuing to show the world just how incompetent he is.

Newt, does commercials with horse face trying to sell us Al Gores carbon tax scheme. Lobbies for Fannie ............

Then we have the frontrunner Romney. The original drafter of Obamacare..I mean really? This is the best they got? Out of All republicans, the only one that drafted Obamacare is the frontrunner and likely president...what a joke.

The media looked even more pathetic then usual last night. They looked like scared children until it was acquired that he placed a strong 3rd. After that they became giddy with their accomplishment. Imagine a 100 billion dollar company throwing everything they got and still quaking in their boots?

As far as Pauls answer to the reporter, I thought it was great,It's called honesty. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that Pauls campaign is more then winning the presidency and more about spreading a message. A big tide is being set in motion. The the old dried out neo-con wing is dying off as the young constitution following wing is moving in...for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.. Rand Paul who Ron has groomed to take out the trash will do just that..Unless of course there is a "convenient" car accident scenario.

I agree with Swampwalker.

RP will not run third party. I was at a convention where he attended and I asked him that question. He said "no". Although I don't agree with RP on some issues, he is a personable guy to visit with and folks had best listen intently to his economic message. He knows what he is talking about.

So far, those running in the R Party (with the exception of Santorum) are nothing more than the same old tired status quo that helped bring America to where we are today. You think these people will restore your liberty? If so, you will be in for a rude awakening. Frankly, I am beginning to think that O will be re-elected. For a variety of reasons. Bottomline, this nation has lost its fear of God and any nation (or individual) that does so ends trashed on the ash heap of history.

Only national repentence will turn this country around and that starts with each one of us.

Couldn't agree with you more. However, fear of God among the people does nothing when our elected officials couldn't give two craps. There's a whole lot more paper in stacks of hundreds than there is in a Bible. Don't believe any politician when they claim to be religious.

On another note, here's a great video for all of those that hate free-loaders and such. RP isn't going to forget to combat those too.

Of course not, they'll just slow down liberty's erosion. There's no way the American electorate will put someone like Santorum in power. He actually thinks people should have to work for what they get. That's so 1800s Greg.

The existence of about half of the voters in this country is funded by the other other half. As long as that's true, a real conservative, someone with the vision and fortitude to attempt to return this country to its former glory, will not be elected.

The only thing that will send me to the polls this year is the fact that I absolutely don't want Obama to have a chance to appoint more life-tenured judges. A liberal Supreme Court, with justices that believe the Constitution is a "living document" or should be interpreted based on international input, scares the bejeezus out of me because of the long-term negative impact it would inevitably have on our futures.
