Gander Mountain is selling a 20GA Ultra Slug in synthetic for 179.99! Their website said they are sold out but I wanted to call and confirm just to make sure. After they transferred me a few times they finally told me the store closest to me had ONE left in stock! I told them to hold it for me and drove 2 hours over there and filled out the paper work. It stinks I have to drive there again tomorrow to pick it up, but I'm glad I finally got a good deer gun for this upcoming gun season! Now I need to search for a decent scope to go along with it. Here is the website page with more details:

I'm gonna put some Hornady sabot slugs through it and see how it does, will report back to you guys when that happens!

Those Ultra sluggers are very accurate. My g/f runs a 12ga with the laminated stock. I bought it a couple years back for her.

I have a handful of buddies who run them as well and nothing but good things to say about them.

Congrats.

What I got is the light version, it weighs in about 5 1/2 pounds and is chambered for 3" shells. I bought it over at the Evansville Gander Mountain.

I read an article about a 20 gauge shooting a 3 1/2 and putting buffalo down at over 150 yards in an Outdoor Life Article but not sure which issue and not sure of the name of the shotgun. You got a good price on that gun forsure. I live in Indiana and it is still 2 1/2 hours from me to Evansville. Good luck hunting.

I have an Ultra slugger hunter model (SB2-980). The scope I put on is called Nikon slughunter BDC 200 reticule. The scope has a reticle. Read the directions and do as they say. In the end you have a gun that is dead on at 50,100,150 and 200 yards. This scope costs 250 dollars at the store. If you can afford it, defiently go and buy this scope. Otherwise, buy the best scope you can afford.

I have read a lot of stories where guys put cheap scopes on their slug guns and they break, because of how powerful the gun is.

This might be obvious, but, whatever you do, do not shoot regular slugs out of it. Only use sabots with rifled slug guns not the cheap slugs. If you use regular slugs instead of sabots, you will reck the rifling in the gun. What happens is, because regular slugs are made of cheap plastic, once fired, this plastic will get in the rifling and in time your accuracy will fail.

You may have to try many different kinds of sabots. Mine likes the Hornady SST'S. With my slug gun I can put one inch groups at 100 yards, at 150 four inch groups and finally, at 200 yards I can put about a seven inch groups. I am very happy with mine. You will never regret the purchase.

+1 what buckhunter2 said. Have same setup and real shooter. I shot most available rounds when started and settled on WW Partition Gold 3", 2000 fps, 260 gr[19/32 oz] sabot. Hornady which I usually love was a disappointment compared to WW.

Put a trigger pull gauge on that bad boy AND if heavy or rough to your standards, if so, call H & R and see what they can or will do. At one time they would adjust if =>6 #. When I bought mine several years ago they would adjust for $25 with return shipping included [paid outbound shipping]. I asked for as close to 2# as they could get it, came back a crisp 2.5# or so. I think H & R have changed owners since so may no longer be an option.

Good luck with your new gun.

I have the heavy barrel 12 gauge and shoot cheap Foster slugs all the time. Just have to hit the barrel with a brass brush after 20 or so shots. Winchester works far better than Remington in mine. Buckhammers are also quite popular.

I didn't know they were making the 20ga in a 3 1/2".

Let us know when you shoot it. I'm interested in how the recoil is. Has anyone shot one of these in 12 and 20 to see how they compare? They can't be that much worse than a pump shooting slugs, can they? These from GM are pretty light, so that kinda makes me nervous, but then again I wouldn't want to lug it around all day or shoot off hand if it was too heavy.
