Got my biggest coyote ever yesterday.

Got out for some calling yesterday, had a good day! We killed 5 coyotes.

Highlight of the day for me though was this 44 pound male I got.

44-1.jpg

The one behind him is a mature male, that is actually a pretty good sized coyote for the area we were hunting, at just under 30 pounds.

He came in to the Foxpro playing the jack rabbit distress sound me and my buddy Tim recorded last winter. As soon as I spotted him coming I could see he was a big dog. I took him at 80 yards with the .17 Mach IV using a 25 gr. Berger. A more decisive bang-flop I've never seen. And not a mark on him. When we walked up to him, we could tell from 20 yards away that he was HUGE. At least for this area.

Here's another shot, kind of blurry, but you can see how deep that sucker is. That's a 20 pound YOY in one hand, the 44 pound yote-a-saurus in the other.

All told, we took 3 mature males, 1 mature female and one young female for the day. Just a light streak of blue on the backs, nearly prime. Good fun!

I would have loved to see that .17 bullet plop it down.
I took one that big a few years ago and your right, they are quite impressive to walk upon.

When I skinned him I left his feet on. I fleshed him and turned the ears and stuff then put him in the freezer instead of a stretcher this morning. Not sure if I'll have a rug made out of him or just tan the hide. Definitely keeping his fur though. Kept the skull too.

That's one massive coyote! Not too many like that around here either. 25lbs is about average. Got my biggest last year at 35lbs.

44 is definately a trophy.

Mussman, that is an elastic strap with velcro on the ends. I can hook the Foxpro onto my belt with it, or attach it to a fence post or a piece of sagebrush or whatever. Comes in real handy!

WOW Dave, good'un.

Glad someone got to hunt this weekend. It rained here all weekend /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif .

Did you get any footage of him?

DAA--That certainly had to be the "King of Coyotes" around that territory. Did you do an estimate on how old he was? It's good to hear that they are priming up.

Byron, we got NO footage of him, at ALL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif . Long story short, our camera crapped out earlier in the day. I'm hoping that a couple good scenes from the morning are "okay", but the camera had up and died and we weren't even carrying it when I got the big guy. Be sending the camera in to Canon this week to see if it can be saved.

Silverfox, judging by his teeth, I figure he was not more than 4 years old. Maybe even 3 years old. His teeth weren't worn any more than the smaller adult male on the ground by him in the first picture.

now that ive seen wut u guys consider a "trophy" yote i shoulda weighed the one me and my dad got last year. it was definatly larger then that one in the pic (im judging by gun size to yote size) and was real heavy.

wasnt a coydog as it looked EXACTLY the same as the "purebred" yotes in all the pics i see.

wasnt really bigger then one in the pic but noticably bigger....say 6-7 lbs more.

maybe yotes up here in ontario get bigger?

ill throw in my digi cam and fishing scale for the next one!

DAA, thats a nice big dog ya got there. i shot one between pueblo and penrose in 1984 weighed 52 pounds on a cotton scale. he too was shot with a 17 caliber, only mine was a 17/223. he came in to a jack tape as well. hit him about 1/4 inch to the left of his nose at about 10 yards. there was a crease all the way back to the back of the jaw where it blew up. people have no idea how hard it is to hit a flopping, leaping and jumping coyote even at that distance. i managed to put a second one thru the chest.
needless to saw that was the first coyote i called in colorodo. i had no idea what a trophy i had, besides the ranch foreman and i were selling and splitting the cash for the pelts. we got 90.00 for him, sure wish i had made a rug out of him.

good going, ps always carry a back up camers.

Why you hunting them so early in the year ? I guess that's one of the reasons I don't find many dogs after fur is prime, too many people here calling them all times of the year ! Nice dawg anyway Pard !

DAA - That is one good looking 'yote!!!! Congrats on that big dog. Sounds like that Mach IV with the Bergers is workin' great. Thanks for the pics, and once again, NICE dog.
