Any of you fellas live in these area's? I thought that it would be towards the end of the year before I would get a job in CO. but there is a job opening in Pueblo and in Grand Junction, my question is where is the better coyote, Bobcat, Elk and deer hunting to be had in the Southest or in the Western part of the state?
What kind of terrain? Are their mountains close by.... you can PM or post it here whatever you would like. Thanks for the info fellas.

Deer are everywhere in Colorado...Eastern Colorado has White Tails and just about every where else is mulies. Coyotes and bobcats are all over too.....I wouldn't say Pueblo or Grand Junction areas are better or worse.
Elk are about everywhere too, but you just need to scout to find a herd that will be where you want them to be when your hunting season starts.

From Pueblo as well as Grand Junction fine hunting is within an hours drive as well are the mountains.

Fishing might be better closer to Pueblo though.

ColoradoOsprey,
Well that was helpfull and not helpfull all at the same time. I have heard that the western part of CO is more plentiful for elk and deer is that correct?

cweeks let me be a little more helpful. If I had a chance to chose I would choose Grand Junction. It is in the western part of the state and that is the location of most of the bobcats. The Elk are everywhere but most of them are closer to GJ. I am not bias but I lived in Pueblo and I hated it.

Grand Junction, what a beautifull place!Short drive up into the mountains and some fantastic elk and mule deer hunting. Some of the prettiest coyotes i ever seen were in those mountains,i sure miss that place.Oh!and some good fishing too....Been there and done that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

yote_tote,
So if I move to the GJ would you divuldge the spots to start fishing and hunting until I have more time to get out and find my own spots?

CWeeks,if you decide to move there, keep in touch. You can always find me here at Predator Masters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I don't love either place as they are fairly Godforsaken, but I would have to choose GJ over Pueblo. Game is available in both places. Record book deer can be had in either (GJ has the edge). Antelope (Pueblo has the edge). Elk, both take driving but both offer good areas in driving distance (toss up). Pueblo is closer to upland game and duck/goose hunting (although GJ has some also). Fishing is probably a toss up. Coyotes are rampant thru out the state, hard to say which town has the edge (probably Pueblo, uncontrolled prairie dogs). I would lean to GJ due to the ability to get away from all those people easier (more wild on the western slope, more California on the Front range). Just my read...

Well i don't live in either one, but do spend time every year in the juntion/rifle area, rifle is about 60 miles from juntion and an easy drive along the colorado river.
If you hunt the rifle area, i would start on the back side of the roan cliffs,( trust me you'll know them when you see them ) great hunting period, i have seen world class cats and elk come out of there.
Any local can tell you how to get up there, the one thing you Must remember is to watch your thunderstorms, you can be trapped up there while waiting for the water to go down. blue

I just moved to Grand Junction about 2 weeks ago. I have lived several places in Colorado. I like GJ better than Pueblo. Pueblo is out on the plains.

Problem is, both are $8 an hour towns.

I don't live in either place, but I have visited both places, and I would take Grand Junction anytime over Pueblo, lot's of outdoors activities in the GJ area, I think it would be a nice place to retire to! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll say one thing for the western slope, ... one heck of a lot of money floating around there, i live in eastern oregon and their always advertising up here for workers, starting at 70k, it costs a bit to live there though. blue

The myth that Grand Junction has all these high paying jobs is just that, a myth! Most jobs around here are paying $9-12 an hour.

Grand Junction = Monster Trucks

Pueblo = Lowriders.

Take your pick...

CWeeks, I have lived in Pueblo for 52 years. I hunt, fish ride atv's, camp, ect. Its only a couple of hours to real goood elk and deer hunting. Coyote hunting is real close. Arkansas river 50 miles to some of the best flyfishing there is. My vote Pueblo.

I think if coyote hunting a fishing are your goals, you are better off near Pueblo. Plus, the front range offers a lot more as far as shopping, house prices, and airport access.

Only reason I moved to Junction is my wife got a good job here.

Well I will make the same either place cause I will be working for the State of Colorado and will be making well over $20 and hour for the first 2 years so I am not worried about that at all. Deer, Elk, Coyotes and Bobcats are the top priorities, although I love fishing it is secondary to the others.
Well if anyone else has any further info for me to know please share it but I am leaning towards GJ right now. I sent my application to both places and they have already contacted me and sometime in the next3-4 weeks I will be going down for an interview I would imagine and we will see what happens from there. IT IS SOUNDING VERY PROMISING FOR GJ RIGHT NOW!!!! Thanks again for all the input.
