Gray fox messing with my chickens

I caught a glance of a gray fox trying to get into my chicken coop yesterday. The seasons closed otherwise I would of shot it.

I need to live trap this thing and relocate it

The only live trap I have is a 12" H x 10" W x 32", thats caught many cats and grinners.

Would this be big enough for a adult gray fox? Also how should i set it up

Should have shot it.

NY regs state that a nuisance animal causing damage that is otherwise out of season is fair game.

I have shot two chicken killing coyotes out of season with the blessings of the NY State Police.

They told me if they are coming on your property and causing mischeif then we don't care what ya kill them with as long as it isnt dynamite.

They also were quite vocal to announce that they didn't give two shits what DEC had to say about it either.

As long as you are the property owner or have hired and or given permission to someone to give them a dirt nap, then you are good to go.

Look it up in the regs. Its in there

Thanks for the info that's good to know. It was just sneaking around and scratching at the walls so I didn't know if it be legaly justified sence is wasn't actually attacking the chickens.

What's ny law on setting traps? I'm sure a 220 bucket set would take quick work of it.

Keep an eye on it for when it comes back.

If it's digging under the wire or tearing up whatever to get in to get them, then that's cause enough to blast it.

I had a marauding coon slip in one night during a summer storm and killed all my guinnea fowl flock.

Didn't eat a one of them, just killed all 12 and chewed a little on the heads.

Needless to say that sucker is no longer among the living.

Get him now before he gets them.

nuisance animals that are bothering domestic stock are fair game in NY State. HOWEVER: you are supposed to report them to the DEC. I had an aquaintance (he's on this board somewhere) that had a bear destroying one of his bee hives. He called the DEC and they told him to shoot it. He did, and they came and picked up the bear because it was an "out of season" kill. They wouldn't let him posess or use any part of it.

Most fox/chicken problems are from "free ranging" chickens that are not penned up at night.

just my .02.

Don't blame a fox for taking an easy meal. If it is truly becoming a nuisance, that's another issue.

Wish we had more gray fox here.

wow. I cant believe the replies here, especailly with a wildlife officer on here

all I can say is, before you do any of the above suggestion, you might either want to call your local wildlife officer and ask for advise or do one of the suggestions and keep mum about it. personally I would call the wildlife officer first

There should be a nuisance animal company around you. If not, call your game department. They will probly have a trap they can bring out.You may also try squirting coyote urine around your property. Coyote will kill fox.It may fool him into staying out of your area.

a complete and utter myth on warding off anythign with any urine

call your game department

It may be a myth. But if you use coyote urine at a fox set, forget about catching a fox.You may get a young uneducated one to check it out,but nothing else.

FALSE!
you need experience , no offence but i have caught VERY MANY foxes at coyote sets cats at coyote sets gery fox even red! and vice versa urine is purely a ALL AROUND attractant! it has nothign to do with warding off any canine or cat actualy cats and fox have shown as well as fox that another species dominant or not is a little MORE attractive to the other!

fox are not afraid of coyote urine never have nor will be you will catch just as many at a flat post or hole set with fox urine alone or with a bait or lure as you will any other urine.
FACT

I'm not offended one bit.Could be western fox see enough coyote to not get excited about it.Here, if you use a dirt hole for example. The fox is gonna be nervous coming in even if you are using fox urine. He is attempting to steal anothers meal,so is wary.If you set for coyote, using coyote scent, good luck on fox. Also, here where we used to call fox,if coyote move in the fox are gone. No tracks,no sign, nothing.
