gun bluing

anybody ever try their hand at bluing? I've heard in the past that it is just to difficult to accomplish a decent finish by hand. did a little research and found the wonder blue. has anyone tried that? or is it not any better than birchwood and caseys

Brownell's Oxpho Blue is the best cold blue I've ever worked with. The 44/40 isn't to bad either. Neither is a real substitute for a real caustic blue, but pretty good for touchups.

Think you meant "Blue Wonder". I've used it for a number of years now. Usually I have very good results with it when doing a new barrel. Mixed results when doing a rifle receiver...has to do with hardness/alloy of the metal. Only other product I've used that I'd trust, besides Blue Wonder, is Brownell's Oxpho Blue, which is great for small parts, screws and such and is easier to use than Blue Wonder. But, for covering a large area of metal...have better results with Blue Wonder giving a nice even finish than the Oxpho Blue.

If you are doing an action or any big piece, save your money on cold blue and have it hot blued, nothing works. ed

I agree completely....you can always do the prep yourself to make sure its good enough for you.

I bought the Oxpho Blue for my Dad to use on 2 different rifles. I thought they came out real nice. Dad just heated the barrels up with a heat gun and followed the directions on the bottle. Looks good.

Bluing comes in different qualities, take a flashlight and hold close to your barrel or action, you will be shocked. ed

I've done hot blueing and most recently I have done 5 guns using rust blueing. Both give somewhat different but very nice results. As with any finish the the end results depend on the quality of the surface preparation. The surface prep is always the key and that can take a lot of time and careful work-keeping square corners etc. I haven't had any experience with the new cold blues other than some touch up so I don't know if they would with stand the test of time. Good blueing takes time. Dave
