Gun cleaning help

Can anyone help me reduce the time it takes to clean a rifle? I've been using the same routine forever and it just takes too long. I use the same process as many do, cleaning patches until they come out clean, but sometimes this can take and hour or maybe more. I'll use the Birchwood Casey bore scrubber solvent and this does seem to speed things up, but mostly I use Hoppe's. Maybe the Hoppe's just isn't "hot" enough to remove all the crud as fast as the spray in solvents. I get to where I just dred cleaning any of my guns! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

I use Hoppes copper and bore cleaner on patches.

Are you using a brush before running patches through?
Do you have a good/tight fit with your patches when going down the barrel?

It takes me about 6-8 patches to get the patches to look light grey instead of black. I never clean mine 100% so I don't change the accuracy on a cold bore shot.

I start with wet patches to saturate the inside of the barrel, run the brush down the barrell a few times, wet patches, dryer patches, over and over and over and eventually finish with a patch with a light coating of Rem oil.

Bore Tech Eliminator, patches turn blue after you are sure it is clean with any other solvents I have tried.

WipeOut or one of the other foaming cleaners, they all work pretty much the same, I've used most of em. I've refined my cleaning method, use Hoppe's Elite Cleaner for the carbon fouling and one of the foams for the copper, takes about 10-15 minutes of actual hands on after an overnight soak with the foam. I've tried foam first, then soak, and clean the next day. Also have tried the Hoppe's first, then a few strokes with a nylon brush, patch it, then foam and leave overnight, this latter method seems to work a bit better as the 6mmBr article suggests. Either way doesn't take much actual time spent on the rifle.

Can't beat Wipe Out. Run a couple patches of whatever solvent is handy, to push out the loose crud, fill with foam, and go to bed. Patch it out, good to go. If you're in more of a hurry, like pd's laughing at you, Bore Tech Eliminator is about as fast and effective as any out there.

I soak the barrel with Shooter's Choice and use a Tipton bronze brush. General wisdom is one brush stroke for each time the gun has been fired. I use fewer strokes than that.

I then hold the barrel downward and spray the carbon fouling out with a shot of Gun Scrubber. Then I run a patch or two through to dry the barrel. Next is a patch soaked in Sweets. Follow the directions. It usually takes less than 15 minutes to get the bore clean. Sweets is aggressive so the following of directions is important. Tipton also makes a similar product that is a little more aggressive but also a lot more expensive and harder to use.

Butch's Bore Shine is also a fine product but takes a while longer. I sometimes use it at the range.

+1 on the Bore Tech here too.
I've tired the Wipe Out, Otters, Montana Extreme, Hoppes, Sweets, Butches Bore Shine and Barnes Copper Solvent, they all work to some extent....But the Bore Tech has worked the best and the quickest of all these.

Bore Tech Eliminator is what goes down my barrels from now on.
