gun cleaning snake -vs- rod

Looking for some help! I've used a rod and patch for cleaning and my friends are telling me to use a snake. Anybody out there using snakes over rods and patchs.
Thanks

It snakes are very convenient for cleaning at the range or if you get dirt in your barrel but should NOT replace using a rod, brush and patch. A snake can't get the barrel completely spotless but I like to use them in-between the time I use a rod.

I use one to clean my bow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I agree with what these guys said. Also, there's been a number of reports of guys breaking the bore snakes off in the barrel. All of the stories I heard of them breaking was with small bore rifles. All but impossible to get whats left out of the bore. I do however use bore snakes on my shotguns. If I'm out goose hunting for the weekend, I use the snake at the end of the day, and at the end of the weekend I'll tear the gun down and use a rod. Just something to think about. I personally will not use a bore snake on my rifles, but thats not to say they're not useful.

Bore Snakes seem to be popular at my range. I've watched the ritual on several occasions. Drop this brass tip of the Bore Snake down the bore then when it comes out the other end you let it go down onto the ground. Now you step on it and lift the rifle. Now you lower the rifle and step on the snake again and get it the rest of they way through the bore.

I’m looking down at the snake watching them grind it into the dirt. The process continues they continue to grind more dirt into the snake. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture? Apparently most of the people doing this don’t because I’ve mentioned it to them. They just look down briefly at the Snake and continue on. Duh!

Bore Snakes are great for field use where you use it once or twice at most, but any more than that would be just like reusing patches and I don't think most shooters consider that a good practice.

Snakes are intended to be washed after each use, place it in a mesh bag meant for laundering and throw it in the washer with a load of dark clothes, or wash it by hand.

If you want a pull thru, get a Patchworm or an Otis Cleaning system.

I use my bore snake on my pistols and any firearm that I have shot extensivly. I like it because it helps to get the job done quickly. I still use my rod and brush and patches for the final job, but you cant beat a snake for getting alot of the crud out quickly.
