I have finally broke down and figured out I need to upgrade my cleaning methods. Solvents,Lubricants,Degreasers.etc etc all confuse me...I need help by you guys telling me exactly what I need.

The only guns I'm using anymore are the .243 and the .221. Thankfully I have yet to give either a good cleaning and Im wanting to start off by doing it right.

On my list so far I have-
1)Possum Hollow Boreguides for each rifle
2)Dewey 30" one-piece cleaning rod .22-26cal.

This is where I stopped. If you could give me the order in which you use the particular product youre reccomending to me.
Thanks in advance

You're on the right track. You listed the two most important pieces of cleaning. A good quality bore guide and rod. Dewey rods are excellent, as are the Tipton carbon fibre rods. There are a a number of good bore guides out there, I like the Sinclair's personally. Solvents are a matter of personal preference, but you'll probably want one specifically for copper in addition to an "all around" solvent. I have been using Bore Tech copper solvent with good results. A light coat of grease, not oil, on the locking lugs of the bolt too. Sinclair has a large selection of cleaning supplies also.

I like Sweets ,but have switched to Wipe-Out Patch-Out for copper. This is liquid ,not foaming stuff.

Some good patches that don't leave strings or large lint in the barrel.

Gary, you might want to think about the 40 or 44 inch rods, or at least a 36 inch.
One of these days you'll get a gun with a 26" barrel and you'll be looking for another rod.

Ask me how I know.

Thanks guys lol.

Tim,Jeff, I have a 26" bbl 22-250! I think Ill get a 40" to be on the safe side.

Looks like this is gonna be a good order for Midway.

Gary ,I run 36",but don't have any barrels over 24".

Just do a quick measure on the longest barrel/action and see.

What do you guys run on lug grease ?
Heck I never heard of such a thing till I got into custom stuff.

I've been using a lite coat of antiseize, but would like sumtin diff. It's messy stuff.

BRB!

Sell it or cut the barrel off...grin

I thought about cutting it down to 20" Its a HB and very heavy, them ream it to AI and make up for lost speed?

Looked good on paper.....On 2nd thought I dont need a stinkin' 22-250

I don't need a bore guide.

I read the marketeering literature from the bore-guide makers and their devoted customers.

I don't bend the rod, have no problem centering the rod into the barrel, don't slop up the gun with excess cleaning solvent, etc,etc...

I guess I'm not a member of their targeted audience.

Outers or Hopps Cleaner & Oils that came with my Wally-World Gun Cleaning Kits is good enuff IMO.

But I'm a KISS principle kind of guy.

Your mileage may vary.

Tim,
I had been using ML breech plug grease or choke tube lube. A while back I broke down and bought a little tube of "Tetra" gun grease. I think it was around $6 and it should last a long time.
Some of the big-time gunsmiths say that you should only use oil in a spot that you can't use grease.
