gun not registered to you

Depends on the state you live in. If its in California, everything regarding the exchange of weapons is illegal except STUPID politicans of which we have many! Many of those have dull blades (if you get my drift).
 
There are no national laws that I am aware of but you may want to check local laws reagrding the transfer of a firearm. I know here in AZ we just have to check that the buyer is an AZ resident and thats it.
 
when you buy a gun from an individual, there is no record of that purchase. if and when you trade it or sell it thru an ffl, then the paperwork shows who bought/sold the gun and it is in the system again.
a gun could be traded/sold several times between individuals without any paperwork ever being done. in the system, the original buyer would still be listed as the owner.
 
if you buy from a dealer it shows up that what ever gun you bought belongs to you.. here in tenn you can buy and sell as you want. say you have a gun i want and ur selling i walk up hand you the cash and get the gun walk away no paper work or anything totally legal
 
same in Indiana. You can buy and sell person to person. I even sold some at a garage sale, but I made the buyer produce a concealed carry permit and ID for my own peace of mind. (Im a policeman and know that bad guys aren't going through government bullcrap to get a gun, but I dont want to be taking rounds from someone's yard sale gun)
Unless your selling a gun to a known felon, or a felon buying one, then it opens up a can of worms

Yard sale guns dont know where they came from, I dont want you to take bullets from any gun, but blame the person behind the gun, not point of sale. ed
 
When I have sold a gun that had come from a dealer and the records show that I own it, I make a simple receipt with the buyers name, address and drivers license number, date and have them sign it.
That way if it should show up in a bad way I have proof that I did not own it at the time.
 
Laws very from state to state...

I know that California does require registration of all fire arms.. Not just a 4473.... Beware.... They even wanted old family heirlooms registered….
 
When I lived in Hawaii, I had to take my guns to the police dept to be registered. Made me feel very violated.

the way I understand the law or rule or whatever you call it is when you buy a longgun you have a background check. yes the serial number is on there but from what I understand doj can only keep that info for like 60or 90 days then it must be destroyed. hence no record. they may know how many guns you have but not what. most of the time I don't go through an ffl unless I am dealing with someone I don't know. I don't know about handguns that may be another animal.

if the serial number ever gets run on a gun by police all that comes up is if it is stolen or not and not who it belongs to.
 
Feds do not register, but they can get all the information by taking my record book.
And like I mentioned Calif. knows, hence the state run assault weapons band. How are they to know what it is if they do not run the numbers?
As far as the police not having the numbers, if they did, honest officers would start letting the cat out of the bag..
That state keeps this information for our safety, you know what I mean?
