Gun safes---Who has them, what brand, opinions

Guys and ladies,

My wife and I are buying a new home, hopefully closing by the end of this month. The wife has given me the go-ahead for a safe purchase, with the only factor is that its a good one. Price is obviously a factor, but I'm not going to be cheap on something like this either.

I'm looking at the safes sold by Cabelas (Liberty and Champion), Patriot Gun Safes, Liberty, Cannon, and Browning.

Anyone have any experience they'd like to impart on me? (boy, that's a loaded question around a group of hunters) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
My dad has a Liberty safe, and that is a direction that I'm leaning. The Patriots look very nice too.

I'm looking at getting the biggest one I can afford (24 gun), it won't be full, but I'm sure it will be sooner than I think.

Any help will be appreciated. Post up some pics of your safes too!

Thanks!

Pete

I have two very old Tread Locks with Meco locking system, the locking system is one of the best for security, but the safe it's self, is min. security.

Any of the safes you mention above should work just fine. They are all well built, but I really like the Browning and Liberty the best.

Sturdy Safe Company. Look them up on the web. I have a 6 foot model, as well built as the rest and you can have it configured many different ways. I was able to write it off on my taxes since I keep my tax records in there....(records storage).

I've got a Cannon I purchased at the local Costco. It's pretty heavy and holds 27 guns. It was under 700 bucks and the only downside is it's full now. What ever you get make sure it's about twice as big as you think your going to need. Wife's got here jewelry in it and our personal papers and...

My 2 cents.

+1

Liberty makes a very nice safe. They actually have overlapping fire protection around the door.

I have a Fort Knox in my basement man cave "as my wife calls it" that I like. And a small cheap model for the guns upstairs. There are many good ones on the market. But I have to agree if at all possible buy the largest you can afford and your floor will support. If your into guns and hunting you will need the room someday.

I've got a Liberty Lincoln model, configured for 18 guns and has shelves in it and "TripleFire' protection. It's a great safe; what sold me at the time was their warrantee on them, fire and vadalism etc. When I got it I was pretty young and it was all I could afford (they are pretty pricy), but like the other posts say, get one bigger than you need now. You can never have too much room. If I was in the market for one again it would either be another Liberty or I'd look at Cannon. A buddy of mine got a Liberty Washington from the warehouse in Bessamer Ga. He got a GREAT deal on one because it had gotton dinged up on the bottom sides. Mine weighs 800lbs, my friends is 1700 lbs. When you get one, tell all your friends to come over for beer then get them to help you move it before the drinking starts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

i have the liberty washington model i love it. It gives you a great piece of mind knowing everything is protected when your not home. it has the lighted interior which i would recommend. also buy the biggest you can afford.

i have a cannon 27 gun and a winchester 30 gun, i really like the cannon it has the mecho lock on it, i think that all top name safes are good depending on ho much you want to spend and what interior you want. My cannon i bought at tractor supply on sale for 699.00 Ron

I have a Remington, but it's just a Liberty safe with a Remington logo on it. I purchased mine back in February because I finally couldn't stand worrying about a break in any longer.

One thing to remember is scoped rifles really take up more room than most safe makers allow. Mine is a 24 gun safe but my scoped rifles make the 12 slots on the left side only really hold about 9-10 guns.

i have a patriot 25 gun safe . believe everyone here when they say buy one larger than you need . my patriot has a lot better fire rating than most of the others.i would get another one in the future.

What ever you get, bolt it down! I moved a 2200 lb safe, door close with just
me and a friend. It's not that hard. I moved a 800 lber door closed by myself
with just a regular dolly. ( the doors lift off when open, definitely the easier
choice.) If it's in a basement all a criminal needs is a skill saw with a metal
blade and the top is off in a few minutes, no noise for the neighbors. If you
can stuff it under a stairwell or something , all the better. m2c

Good advise from bigwheeler! I have the Browning without the fire protection and I am kicking myself in the rear for not spending a little more for that!

I have a Liberty and wish I had another for the reasons mentioned above. Be careful where you put it in case of a fire. If it ends up falling into the basement with alot of other buring materials, the contents will not survive. It's also best to have it well anchored so it can't be easily removed and attacted somewhere else. Other safes have better fire ratings and are more attact resistant, and you will pay for that, but none are perfect protection.

I lived in SB ca. back in the painted cave fire (1990 or so) 430+ houses went up.
I bought my safe from a guy that opened 72 safes of various kinds for the fire
victims. He said, with no exceptions, if they were above ground (not in the
concrete below the floor) everything in them was baked. The fire protection
just turned it into an oven. He had one Kmart safe
in the concrete slab with a stamp collection and it didn't even melt the cellophane covering the stamps. So don't beat yourself up too much over the
fire protection. By the way, It's just 5/8 fire 4 hr rated drywall, add your own.
And pick up some golden rods to keep it dry. You only need 1 degree over the
surrounding air to have no rust problems.

(side note: for you guys that bought too small a safe; stack enough ammo on
top and it'll bulge the sides enough for one more gun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Seriously,,, Just about any of the name brand safes will keep a thief at bay. Remember it's snatch and grab what ya can carry. Few crack-heads have the forsight to bring a cutting torch with em.

With the economic crisis going the way it is, theft will probably skyrocket.
Anyone that can afford a safe should have one.
