GunKote nightmare........

So I sent my two deer guns out to be finished with Gunkote(both in new condition),exactly 13 days later I recieve them back in the mail. When I opened the box I was in shock as to the finish on both guns.
They had handing marks, spots of orange peel texture, pieces of dust or someting all through them, bare metal parts and areas the the old finish had not been totally removed....

I've had several guns done before but not by this guy,and never a problem.I thought I'd save about $20 and give him a try, afterall he had a very professional looking website... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Anyway was here's his exact response to me via email.

"John,

I make no excuse for the finish because I personally don't feel there is a problem with it. Gun-Kote is a utility grade finish. Orange peel?? I've never in the hundreds of guns sprayed heard that complaint before from anyone. Had I known we were going for show quality I would have perhaps taken extra steps to ensure there be no orange peel in the finish, or may have even suggested Teflon, as it, cosmetically, is a much nicer looking finish."

Lesson learned the hard way,I guess.......

The lesson is of no value if you don't tell the rest of us WHO the work was done by??

The main deterrent of bad business practices is that their poor work will be made public.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Sometimes when you shop around to save money, you don't.

Please let us know who it was, and is he going to fix it for you?

Basically the guy is stating that he did substandard work and he's ok with what he sent back to you. Since when is "taken a few extra steps" an option. Wouldn't your reputation be banked on always taking the right steps.

Maybe you post your complaint here, on Rimfire Central and ARF.com, then send him a link.
Ask him if he's willing to do it right, for free, if you send it back.
If not, take some pics and post them with his name.

I'm just saying.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We need pics...and the person's name that did the work.

No we don't, if tnpnt1 gets his rifles fixed to his satisfaction.

If not, I expect we'll see some pics pretty quick. From that email, I doubt the guy is going to man up and do the job right, but you never know.

GUnkote, ive finished a few guns with KG gunkote. The Gloss finish looks awsome when the surface is prepped correctly. The only 'Orange peel" ive seen is on some old guns that i did where i surface damage couldnt be removed totally and i bead blasted a rough surface on it. These guns were new, obviously the guy didnt prep the surface correctly or handle the gun during the process correctly. RIP OFF. Hope u get it taken care of.

Oh I need his name...........historically is has proven a good idea to know who does crappy work that in their feeble mind is ok.

So far what he's offered me is'nt anywhere close to fair.

I have not contacted him on the phone yet because I'm trying to get all his BS documented through email first.I dont think that letting him redo the guns is even a option,if this work is his standard whats the point?

Also I'm holding off on pics and the name until it's resolved. Whats really scary is if you do a google search on GunKote finishers his shop comes up pretty quickly....

Always a risk shipping off guns. I had a custom rifle built once, and requested it be KG'd in OD Green. The guy called me and told me it was done, and the satin black looked nice. I mentioned it was supposed to be green and he kind of got pissy. I said I would just keep it, if he would knock off a few bucks, since he admitted it was his mistake. He was so stubborn, that he decided he would rather strip the whole thing down, and redo it, rather than give me a small discount.

Good luck!

I believe all options should be allowed to run their course and see if he is willing to make it right by you.

If not to your satisfaction and this is his accepted standard of quality please post some information so the rest of us may steer clear of him or if we choose to save a few bucks we may use him at our own discretion.

I'd like to know who it is too, but....I doubt the info would remain up for very long here. Liability Issue I think they said in the Classifieds regarding posting of bad feedback. Here is a site you can ost the info on:
http://www.resellerratings.com/
Then you could ost a link here. I usually checkout vendors on that site if I've never dealt with them before. The guy you used might already be there although I doubt it, not many hunting or gun related sites listed yet.

peace.

I sent a gun to a company called Hydro-Dip to get it camo dipped. They made a few mistakes on my gun, Customer service was second to none. I sent it in twice and in the end they bought me a new gun, paid all shipping, glass bedded the new gun and had a gunsmith do the trigger on the new gun. The original gun wasn't glass bedded and the trigger hadn't been worked I just threw it out to them and they said ok. Thats how a company should treat it's customers GREAT COMPANY TO DEAL WITH, AND I TELL EVERYONE, JUST AS YOU SHOULD TELL EVERYONE.

If it isn't resolved to your satisfaction I'd like to know who it is also...

Unloaded,
I'm not the mod in this forum but I am a PM Moderator. I'm not sure where this comment is coming from but it simply isn't true...

If you tell the truth, there are never any liability issues.

It is an open forum - if the other side has something to say, they can register and say it.

Excusing poor work quality by saying that it is okay with others is pure BS.

Do yourself a favor and forget this guy. You won't get a refund and I wouldn't let him pay me to touch one of my weapons again after that. Have someone who knows what they are doing rectify the problem and consider it a $$ lost and a lesson learned.

That and let us all know who he is so we can avoid him.
