Great try on finding him, I've tracked down a couple over the years, with only one recovered.
Actually probably the most exciting tracking I've done in my life happened twice in one day(the odds astronomical) my buddy trapped two in one night, one broke the swivel on the trap over the night and the other broke the swivel on the trap as he approached it. This was late February, the bunnies those dogs were eating must have been some tough late season steroid bunnies. We recovered each dog, they leave quite a unique print in the snow with a foot hold on one leg, and they don't travel so far or fast.
Kudos on the ethics of trying to find what you shoot. From my experiences the hunters that are out there just to shoot animals are nearly useless. If you don't care about recovering an animal it leads to not caring if you can shoot worth a darn, which leads to less meat in the freezer and less pelts on the wall. To the benefit of hunting with some of these twits over the years my tracking abilities have prospered greatly and I get the satisfaction of bringing in half the animals they shoot so half what they do ends up being credited to me, and my .40 S&W now has a larger body count than any of my other guns.
