H&R Pardner

Hey everyone!
So 2 weeks ago a buddy and I went into a new piece of property in daylight in the thick woods, and shotgunned a coyote at about 20 yards. It got the itch going so I picked up an H&R pardner 12 gauge pump..nothing special, just a cheap shotgun for beating around in the woods.
Should be here this week Im thinking so hopefully this weekend Ill get to test it out.
Just looking for your #1 option for choke and load. I have read the patterning thread multiple times(cant find it now though) but I want to know if you had to get a shotgun 1 day and go kill with it the next..what would you personally buy for a choke and load?
Dead coyote is pretty expensive and APEX is ridiculous, so Im hoping to stick to BB or #4 buck.
Thanks!

kinda what I was thinking. My first shotgun coyote was with dead coyote and a mod choke. at 75 yards, only 3 hit it out of however many total in that load. Plan on ordering a couple different chokes but they wont be in for a week or so. Thanks men

Whatever load and choke you decide to go with, take it to the pattern board first and see what kind of patterns it throws, and the maximum distence it will be effective.

I think I’ve got an improved mod choke and #4 buck. It was supposed to be just a mod but when it showed it clearly says improved mod. I’ve got now 4/5 flavors of 4 bk and a couple more chokes I’m gonna go pattern.

You going to take the STS challenge?

same gun?

Oops! Forgot to say no, break action. It put about half the pellets at 20-30 yards into a coyote head and neck last weekend. #4 buck is supposed to be the good stuff for yotes and the Remington stuff works great. Way cheaper than dead coyote too! I’ll have a write up on the ammo and chokes tomorrow evening.

+1 to that. I used to use Federal but then noticed that something had changed in their recipe and we were getting runners. We have since found that the Remington #4 buck, 3in, 41 pellet shells work great and are a great value.

update
came with a mod choke. picked up some hornady heavy mag coyote 3 inch bb and shot it at paper. looked pretty darn good at 30 yards..pretty much my average here in michigan timber.Although consistently low.
Took it out last night.. 12 yards I pumped one full of BB.. tracked blood 75 yards, jumped it, heard it barking and howling at me but it was way too thick to see it.
SOOOOOOOO... that was a bummer

You said it was consistently low, how low? At 12 yards if you had centered that load of BB's on that coyote in the head or chest it would not have made another step. Either your gun is severely off or you just flat missed.

Definitely didnt miss I had a pretty solid blood trail just didnt dump it like I was hoping for. At 30 yards if I put the bead about center of a pie plate..its all about the bottom half of it. None above center

First, you didn't hit that coyote solid. BB at 12 yards would dump that coyote dead as heII. That's what I mean by "miss." Not a solid hit in the vitals. Second, use a big paper or cardboard backer behind your paper plate at 40 yards and fire at least five shots to really see where your pattern is centered. If it's just a tad low, get a bigger front bead to raise point of impact to point of aim.

AH gotya gotya. Yea definitely didnt hit it where I intended..I will admit.. I was shaking like a leaf too lol.

Try some of that Remington #4 Buck. I doubt if that yote will go anywhere if it takes one of those rounds. They pattern real in my shotgun.

Update.Im switching to #4 buck for awhile. 2 weeks ago I shot one at 30 yards. Held the bead high, chest on and dropped it. Within seconds it was up and running, too thick to shoot again. Tracked a blood trail 200 yards, it looked like a lung shot deer in some spots. Never recovered that coyote and even went back the next day in daylight, with my dog..still nothing.
Thats with hornady bb 3 inch.
Will see how the #4 performs

Did you ever pattern your gun, choke and load? The statement of "held the bead high" sounds like you are guessing your point of impact and pattern density.
