Hacking together a better thermal camera

I want thermal but seems like thermal scopes are super expensive. I really want 640x512 resolution 30hz and this is like $6500+. Thermal monooculars like the Scout III are a lot cheaper.

Even cheaper is the FLIR Vue for drones. I see the FLIR Vue 640x512 for around $3199 but heard it can go down to $2650. FLIR Vue is super small and easily mounted with the screw mounts and is very compact.

Compact is pretty interesting in that I can helmet mount it easily or create a rail mount also easily for a Vue.

The vue has no screen but this is easily solved with a mini car DVR like this one: https://tinyurl.com/hndl6y2

Another alternative is I can use a VGA to USB thing called EasyCap and hook it up to my android phone. Once on my phone, I can write an app to add an overlay to the image eg my own crosshair reticle.

The Vue seems to have a lot of options: I can mount it to my jeep on the outside and output to my dashmount display (I got the reverse camera) or I can build a mount for it and secure it to my gun.

Can also record much easier with this setup. Something that would be super cool is to get a display like the Recon Jet ($499). This can take the video input from the EasyCap and I can add my crosshairs.

Scout III has video out also but can't power the unit while video is coming out, costs more and is way heavier.

For those that have used it, how rugged is the Vue? Might destroy itself if dropped is my main concern.

Any other hackers out there think this is a good idea?

Actually they sell these wifi backup camera adapters for about $30 on amazon - you plug in video in and it outputs wifi to your phone. Seems this would work pretty well, eg Vue outputs video to the wifi thing then that outputs to Recon Jet or your phone.

I doubt the vue is built to handle any recoil. May have a $3000+ paper weight after a couple shots. Your best bet is to save your money for a thermal scope or keep your eyes out for a used one. I've bought most of mine used and you can find some deals if you keep your eyes open.

You could get into a nice Pulsar Apex thermal scope for around $3200 that will do everything you want and more. And it's designed for such use and abuse.
