Hair on fences

I saw coyote tracks and some hair on a barb wire fence. I found hair a lot as I was going down the fence line. Im certain its coyote. My question is how long will the hair stay on the fence so I can have a general idea how long ago the coyote passed through.

Personally, I'd say it might depend on how hard the wind had been blowing for a few days prior to you finding it.
But, I'm by far, just guessing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I've always depended more on tracks [even though I can't track well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif], & scat that I find in the same area.
Just my opinion though.
Now you've gotten me curious too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

maybe you can rake the area then check again, that will show you fresh tracks. I have walked barbed wire fences, looking for hair, I didn't care how long it was there, just that it was there. Hair showed me where they're likely to cross through so I can use that to set up. I have even turned the barb in hopes it would be more apt to pull hair from a coyote. Remove the hair as you find it, then go check the next week.

The hair can stay for a while. It depends on how hard it was pulled to pull it out. If it snagged pretty good and was pulled hard in the process it could be pinched pretty tight in the turns of wire. I was going to set some snares, but the GA Trapping Reg's only allow snares to be set within 10 feet of a body of water(beaver). I guess we can set them along creeks. But there's to many dogs roaming around here. Mine included, they'd probably follow me to get the bait.

Well, I now have more fence to walk, while talking to a guy a couple of my friends point at me and said him right there, he loves it and he'll show you. I turn and say what I do? he says he has coyotes that pass through his property and never seen one actually hunted, he has only shot em when he sees em. So mid september (I told him I don't hunt coyotes this time of year and explained why) I'll have to go to his property and try to call one in for him, he says that would be great, he has never actually seen a coyote called in. When I get in topugh with him again I'll arange to go to his place and go for a walk to see where they're passing through.
