Hand calls for Africa

I have saved all my dimes, nickels and pennies and am heading to Zimbabwe in September. I will be the last hunter for the season so I may have a chance and anything the Safari Company still have on quota. I read in Craig Boddinton's book Where Lion Roar that the first leopard he shot came into a predator call.

Since I have limited space if figured I may take 1 or 2 hand calls with me. If you have any suggestions on what I should take let me know. If someone wants to give me one of their custom calls I will proudly display it for the home video.

If I can't hunt any of the big cats I am sure that it will bring in the top of the food chain for some good photo opportunities.

All I called in while I was in Namibia were some jackals. We didn't try too hard though, so I can't tell you much about the big cats. I used a custom closed reed call made by a guy who used to post here (GonHuntin). It worked like a charm, and was light and easy to pack. He's making some now out of Springbok horn, which adds a neat African touch. Shoot me an email and I'll put you in touch with him if you're interested.

Socal hunter, I'd have shot that baboon too. The dang thing looks like he was running off with your calls.

Lots of nice critters on your pages. Thanks for sharing the link.

Yep, been there three times and have taken over 50 jackals and called in to many fox to count. I haven’t made it to Zim yet but I have a good friend that worked for a Ph there for a while and he said the jackals are thick and uncalled.

Hunting Leopards at night will bring you your best chances but it is illegal in Zim. You can hunt Leopard at night in the RSA if you are lucky enough to get a permit. Your best chance at jackal will be mornings and evenings around water holes or any good clearings at night especially around any agricultural areas. Calling at night around water is also very good. As far as calls go, any thing that will call in a coyote will work on jackal or leopard. I have called in jackal, hyena, African Wildcat, genet, Cape fox, bat eared fox and several other predators with my CritR call Pee Wee. That’s my #1 coyote call as well. Good luck and have a ball! Africa has the best predator calling opportunities I have ever experienced.

Good hunting.

Q,
