Hand gun for backup

Ruger superblackhawk 44 mag with 7.5 inch barrel. works great as back up or when calling in close brushy areas and you know they are going to be practically running up your gun barrel.

Hey Bofire, those 325gr bullets will penetrate both shoulders of a moose, so I think you will be alright. They can be a bit harsh in the recoil department, but one should do. I carry a well loaded(300+ gr bullets) .44 or .45 Colt whenever I am in the woods. Bears we have plenty of, but not Mt Lions. My Uncle was a hunter for the state of Oregon a good many years ago, killed quite a few lions, main gun was a .22 mag for perfect broadside shots in a tree, and he had a .357 for when things went bad.

Cougars aren't difficult to kill. They are thin skinned and relatively small. For cougar protection a S&W airlight .38 special would work just fine. It's small enough and light enough to fit in the pocket. The .38 special has plenty of power for a cougar. With the concealed hammer "chiefs-special" style you don't have to worry about a hammer getting snagged on something. Furthermore, being a revolver, if need be it can be fired from within a jacket pocket and not have a cycling problem. And in a small and light package it doesn't add much weight and bulk to carry.

EDIT: brain working slower than keyboard.

I have to go with the kimber cusotm carry 45, great gun, safe to carry and I am good enough with it that for close shots it can't be beat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I carry a sig 228 and practice often with it, whatever you carry it does no good if you can't hit with it. I too, carry mine mostly for 2- legged coyotes. My AR would be hard to turn loose of but if it failed the pistol would be comforting. We are not supposed to have any cougars in Okla. but during Deer season I watched one cross a field for about 600 yards in broad daylight, I felt undergunned with my 7MM REM MAG. But that was awesome just watching it!
