Handgun hunting coyotes...

Any of the tiny ones that folks are putting on semi auto self defense pistols are quite nice. I’ve shot a few Glocks with them as well as an M&P. Pretty cool.

If you have the room though, like on a revolver, you can try an aim point. Aim point is probably number 1 when it comes to red dots.

Other good brands are Leupold, Vortex, Burris, etc...

The little pistol red dots do great on a shotgun too.

Ive been wanting to try my hand at huntin coyotes with a sixgun. Im waiting for a 41caliber bullet mold to come in for my 41 magnum. Thats one revolver I want to try, the other is a 7 1/2” 357 magnum. Im waiting for the seller to give me a price and ship it.
My 41 is a Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisely Hunter with a 7 1/2” barrel with Rugers integral Scope ring cuts on the barrels rib.
I was thinking about buying the Ultra Dot red dot scope.
I need something that will with stand some recoil.

My sixgun coyote happened this morning. I was actually deer hunting in my stand on my place behind the house. I decided to pack just a single call while laying out clothes last night, the call was a Carver Rabid rabbit. I decided to shift gears and get away from deer hunting. So I pulled the little Carver call out of my pocket. Gave it a nice simple short sequence and put it back in my pocket. She responded to the call Id say within 5 minutes so she had to be close. With the ground being soaking wet from recent rain and the CONSTANT ringing in my ears I have to wonder how I heard her come in, but I did. I reached and skinned my sixgun from my chest rig and took aim. As she stopped I thumbed the hammer, and focused on the front sight. She moved again going to some minor cover, thorns and twigs and such. She took two more steps, stopped and I broke the shot! I saw her fall, get back up and I thumbed the hammer again preparing to take a moving shot. But it wasnt necessary, she was down!
The shot was 40-45yds with a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk Flat top in 44spl. The boolit (bullet) is a 245gr penta hollow point I cast. It was pushed by a healthy dose of H110 with a magnum spark plug.
Ive been wanting this for a while and it finally happened! Not exactly the way I saw or planned but nonetheless I got it done. To me it was a little special, it was on my place, with a boolit I cast and loaded, with the handgun I took my first deer with that too was on my property, just 6yrs later.

i use a TC with 256 Win barrel not alot but I have and was successful between 50-100 yards. I have a burris fast fire 3 on it and it is actually a very accurate handgun far more accurate then I am shooting it. Bought it off an old dude that sold me barrel dies bullets powder and all his reloading data for the round. It came with 300 brass and I will never shoot them up...

i remember reading a Shooting Times back in the early 90's maybe, one of the writers, Jamison i think, wrote an article where he hunted coyotes with a 9mm handgun.... cant remember, a Ruger i believe.

If using a magnum handgun I would urge the hunter to use some electronic ear protection that allows you to hear and then clips the crack of the shot off protecting your hearing. Magnum handguns are particularly obnoxious to the ears. Even a .22 Magnum leaves my ears ringing for the rest of the day. BTW, a .22 Magnum from a typical handgun will chronograph about the same as the .22 Long Rifle from a rifle barrel. Just to give you an idea of the power level. The crack of the handgun is much worse to my ears than a rifle. I have killed a few coyotes incidental to deer hunting with a S&W M29 .44 Magnum, S&W M19 .357 Magnum and Ruger Blackhawk .41 Magnum. Finished off a few cripples over the years with several different .22 LR handguns. Hit right they die quickly as you would expect. To my thinking a 6" .357 Magnum pushing a 125 gr. hollowpoint to 1400+ fps is pure poison for coyotes. And my ears! Walkers and Howard Leight offer affordable and effective muffs that amplify sound and clip gun shot reports. For under $50 it's a smart investment.

Works like a champ - lot of runners though? I must be missing something in that because the two things together doesnt make sense to me.

maybe he means the gun works like a champ. like when you pull the trigger a bullet or something launches out the end of the barrel?

then if it hits a coyote it runs?

just a guess. if that aint it i don't have a clue.

My go-to fur gun for years was an XP 17 Fireball. Also use a 20 BR XP, and 6.5 WSM XP. Have also used a 243 WSSM Savage Striker and 22-250 Sav. Super-Striker, and 6.5-284 XP. Shot one couple years ago with a 7-270 WSM XP/162 A-Max.
