So, I've got a handi in 22 hornet that I'm thinking of sending in to have a new barrel put on in a larger caliber. I was wondering if anyone knows weather or not I can go back and forth between barrels without having to sight in everytime if each barrel has its own scope? Thanks in advance
 
Handi rifles are not that expensive so you should be able to find one at a gun show or on the used rack somewhere in the caliber of your choice. By the time you get a new barrel you will have just about as much as a new gun.
 
Not to hi-jack but to add to. My smith used to stub the handi's. He would cut the barrel in front of the hinge, thread and put on like a Douglas barrel. Waste of money...probably, but still kinda cool.

I've seriously considered it as well, but contemplated doing 2 - 3 barrels if/when I do. No more than the barrels cost, why tie your gun up, and pay shipping on just one barrel.

Zero shouldn't move with the scope attached to barrel, but it doesn't take but a round or two to check it. I haven't changed barrels, but I've broken mine down several times, and never had a problem with it when I put it back together. Likewise, have an Interarms ATD 22 that breaks down, scope attached to the barrel; I have no clue how many times I've had it apart, and have never had a problem with zero.
 
Thanks for the replies everybody. Hey rocky I use to have one of the inter arms i bought for 80 buck with a broken extractor wish I had never sold it.
 
I think you will find that the Freedom Group has shut down the Handi Rifle program. A shame to see another old line company become the victim of the conglomerates.

Nope... if you go back up there and click on that link I provided previously and scroll to bottom of the page, lower left hand corner, you will find the H&R Copyright, and it has been updated to read 2015. Meaning the page has been modified since January 1 of this year.

I want to say someone suggested that last time we had a chat on the Handi Rifles also, but it simply is not so.

Think I paid a little more than a hundred for mine new, back in 93 - 94. Somehow split the barrel on it, and I shot it that way for years. Was no tack driver, but it was still reasonably accurate. Was looking at them on Gunbroker one day and found a gentleman selling used barrels; gunsmith for several decades was retiring, cleaning out old stock. Had about 20 of them listed, so I ordered one up. Although I paid nearly as much for the used barrel as I paid for the gun new, I have not regretted it a second!! It is now a sweet little gun, and a tack driver!

You can still find them on Gunbroker, but you won't find them for $80, I paid almost that for the barrel alone.

Which barrel you looking at for your H&R? Mine's 45-70, bought it a couple years ago. In-laws in NE Mississippi have a little land and I sneak up there to hunt occasionally. The 45-70 single shot qualifies as a primitive weapon up there, and after straightening up the mess in the gun safe after the wife and I got married, there's like 11 - 12 boxes of 45-70 ammo in there. Brother-in-law up in Mississippi has one, pours his own bullets and the works. I figured it was meant to be.

Was going to do the 22 hornet, but I see that barrel is no longer available. Likewise, contemplated the 410/45 get 2 barrels for the price of one there.
 
The info I got was that the program was being discontinued. The reason the barrel selection is minimal on their website, is because that is what is left in their inventory. When the inventory is gone, program ends. I believe someone finally got the company to confirm it.
 
Cool little guns. Cheap for a kid to start on. That little youth model is almost the same length as a daisy bb gun. My kids killed.deer with a 223 and a tasco pro point red dot. Learned to shoot deer by shooting squash and tomatoes and watermelons. A 243 and a 708 or 308 would make cool little trio. I have a friend that uses the youth model with a 1.5 x 5 scope as his rifle for chasing cripples shot by clients in south texas.
 
I have a number of these rifles and barrels and they are good quality for the money. If I had it to do over again I would invest my money in TC Encores, which is exactly what I did. If you want low cost and low quality go with H and R, if you want high cost and high quality go with TC.

High cost.....agreed. High quality?.....not so much, and I have
two of them. One shoots great with a custom barrel. The other
shoots 4" patterns with a factory barrel.

Mike Bellm's business would never have been so good if there
weren't so many problems with a lot of Encores.
