Handi Rifle

I like my .223 HB. It shoots well enough for me and I got it new for a real killer deal. It's good enough for me, & I didn't "settle" on mine. I would reccommend one if you get a good deal on it. (2cents' worth.)

Life is to short to hunt with a ugly rifle. I have often wondered what the wives of the "NEF crowd" look like I mean good lord look what they will settle for!

Wow Harvey. That is a pretty bold statement. Even if you were joking. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif My Handi 223 shoots pretty darn well. Hec, it averages 1/2" groups with the current load I am using and look at this 3/8" group:

Oh yeah, my wife is pretty fine too. It makes me feel good to walk with her in public and watch other guys "sneak a peak" at her. Not saying she is the ultimate diva, but she sure does it for me.

I really don't care if the rifle is pretty or not. Hec, I will be the first one to admitt they are kind of on the ugly side. But, it's not a flashy range rifle for others to get all google eyed over. I bought it to kill predators and varmints. I have even taken two double with this single shot. So, as long as the rifle is shooitng 1/2" groups and perfoming this good for me, I think the Handi is a great rifle for the person that is on a budget or just wants an accurate calling weapon that they are not afraid to get scratched.

All of my Nef's are very accurate and I didn't have to do any "tricks" to make any of em shoot well. They are less than beautiful works of art, but I have yet to see the gun fashion police in the woods! My wife is a beautiful woman, so that leaves out some peoples theories /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif I have owned rifles, shotguns and pistols made by almost every major manufacturer and all of em make a piece of crap from time to time! Nothing wrong with opinions and personnal experience, But Harvey you are alittle out of line with your comments about peoples wives! I am sure that every gun you own is a work of art and shoots one hole groups at 500yds. Further more, your wife probably reflects your rifles and was a former super model /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just got a H&R Ultra Varmint with 24" fluted barrel, Choate adjustable stock, in .223. I benchrest shot it for the first time last week and it shot into 3" with two diff. types of ammo, both 55 gr and 45 gr(white box Win.) At two hundred yards. And I was shaking like a leaf with an audience of pro shooters. Felt like I used to when I teed off playing golf on hole # 1. I am a terible bench shooter anyway. For $269.00 I am happy! I agree with the earlier post, don't buy a used one. They all have cheap glass on them, usually of too high a power. Too much gamble when a new one is usually $50 more.

I had an Ultra .223 and out of the box it shot
better than MOA.
Shot as well as my T/C.
I am thinking of getting another one.
Oh Ya' I think they look great, they are not ugly at all.
Very well balanced and handle great.

For all the drawbacks and negatives that I think the Handis have, I agree, they aren't that bad looking. Especially when scoped. OTOH, I'm willing to be seen in public with some rather ugly milsurps /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They're worthless. You'll shoot your eye out!

Got this one today. He didn't complain about being shot by a NEF. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I also used inexpensive bulk remanufactured ammo. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Not only is it accurate, but it dropped this guy in his tracks.

I've never personally seen a Handi that would shoot under an inch and a half when others were watching and I've seen a lot of them at the range. Most of them shot somewhere between 2" and 4". Also almost every one of them had extraction problems.

The Ultra's are a different story though. Must be the fat barrel but they're pretty incredible. I've had 5 of them and every one would shoot well under an inch. Cheapest accurate rifles I've ever seen.

Here is my lil superlite NEF in .223. I figure if this is ugly... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

day in and day out, rain or shine using a volume measured amount of surplus WC844, Winchester brass, and a moly'd 55grn Vmax bullet...

Then I can live with ugly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

That's my take on it too. All the rimless that I dealt with had ejector problems and had to have the chambers polished and kept impeccably clean. Even at that, they would usually fail to eject 1 or 2 times out of a 100. The rimmed cartridges seem to be an exception and eject nicely. My 30-30 will put your eye out faster than a Red Ryder. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Never tried an ultra

The FTE problem has been remedied on current and future rifles by them switching to mechanical extractors. It won't be long before they're out of the ejector underlugs and will only provide extractors. For those that don't know, which there have been several at GBO, the extractor only lifts the spent case about ¼", then the case must be removed by hand or the rifle inverted for it to fall out.

A couple new rifles available next year will be a 22"(sheesh!!).35 Whelen and a fluted 24" bull barrel .243 Ultra Varmint. The fluted .243 barrels are available now as an accessory barrel for $115 plus S&F.

This was the same thing I experienced with my 223 and 22 hornet NEF. My 17 HMR NEF is another story. 3 shots where descent groups, 5 shot groups were another story.

That's a smart move and will improve the Handi considerably. I'm not much interested in the high pressure type rounds in the Handi anymore, but if they correct the twist rate on the .44 mag I'll order that barrel. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
