Has anyone ever shot and killed a coyote with a .22?

There are some states that limit the firearms used to rim fires and shotguns, so I'm pretty sure that has happened..

While it's not my preferred way, I'll be going to FL next week and their public WMAs are restricted to such, so it's very possible that, if the ideal opportunity to do so presents itself, I may exercise that ability..

I was heading out to do some calling the other day and was thinking about what gun I've probably killed more coyotes with than any other.

Close tie between the .22 LR and .12 ga..

To be fair, that includes hound bayed coyotes and trap dispatch. And alot of kills were incident to hunting small game and all I had was a .22 ,but the coyotes didn't seem to care that they were shot while I was rabbit hunting. It was all academic to them.

Def. not my first choice, but it has killed coyotes for me in the range described.

I've killed a few trapped coyotes with a 22LR. I've also killed several large feral dogs with a 22LR. Head shots are needed for quick kills though.

I suspect most are going to roll their eyes in disbelief when they hear this story, but it really did happen....

I rounded a curve on my snowmobile a few years back to see a coyote feeding on a winter killed deer. My only gun was a .22 Colt single six loaded with .22 shorts that I carried in a shoulder holster up under my coat (I'm a houndsman and often use .22 shorts to shoot bobcat out of trees).

The coyote of course took off as soon as it seen me and by the time I got my snowmobile stopped and my pistol dug out from under several layers of clothes it was 100 yards away and moving fast. I started popping off shells at it and as I was about to touch off my last shot, to my utter amazement it piled up dead.

An autopsy showed that one of the bullets (I don't know which shot) had penetrated about 3 inches between the ribs and right into it's heart. I told my hunting partner who was with me when I shot it and seen the bullet hole when we skinned it "yep, that's right where I was aiming!"

I shot one with a .22 rifle while squirrel hunting few years back. It was an 80 yard shot with a subsonic hollow point. I placed the crosshairs on top of its shoulders and fired. It ran about 30 yards and fell with a bullet through its lungs. When hunting them, I always use a .223.

Nope. I use a .243 for my calling rifle more often than not. I do hunt jack rabbits with a .22 and if a yote was in sight I do have some CCI stingers in a 30 round clip that I carry for just such an occasion. It would have to be a perfect scenario for me to try the shot though.

I have done it and consider it like bowhunting; best if you can get close ranges, good angles, and precise shot placement on nearly stationary targets. Those stipulations are pretty limiting so that makes the little rimfire not such a great choice for general purpose calling.

My dad has. The very first day he got his Nylon 66 he was walking down the railroad track and inadvertantlly got the sneak on one that popped up at about 20 yards. He killed it, luckily for him. Now I get razzed by him everytime he see's me going out calling with a centerfire. He probably hadn't killed one in 30 years since till last week he got one in the yard at night with a 30-30 (his only centerfire) at about 15 yards. Had several more pokeing around the house lately so I bought him a box of 3" 4 buck for christmas. It can and has been done, but having more gun is more respectful to the animals last rights...

I personally never have but I know my father did many times. He owned four guns to my knowledge one rifle for huntin big stuff, one shotgun for birds, one 22 rimfire rifle for coyotes and such and one 22 revolver that was gifted to him by a friend. He didn't have any 'tweeners.

Sounds just like my old man. He has never owned a scope, and as long as I have been alive only a Nylon 66 22LR, 1894 Winchester 30-30, Mossberg 3" 12 guage pump. All three hung in the "mud room" where the dogs slept between the garage and the kitchen. My dad never was much for hunting anything other then Pheasants/quail. He only took me squirrel hunting once in my life, but we spent some time chaseing ditch parrots...

Yes my father owned a 1906 Winchester pump 22 that only sshot longs. Watched him shoot several coyotes with it. Don't know how many rounds it held but he would use 'em all. His father used it to kill hogs...shot right down the lisener.

I have witnessed 2 killed by a 10/22, one was by me at guessing around 70-80 yards(lucky head shot) the other was my brother and law and myself unloading each a 25rnd butler mag at starting around 100 yards going to 200 yards. the yote was hit a few times when we tracked him out.. neither was because i/we were marksman about it..

I've shot a trapped bobcat with a K22. Also we've shot shot lots of big treed coons with .22 rifles. My dad has shot one or two coyotes with a .22 just because it was what he had on hand. But we don't make a practice of hunting coyotes with .22s.

Fixed your spelling too.
You're welcome.

In our state of SC... we can only use rimfires at night...so... I do plan on killing them with my 22mag... 50 grainers... it does wonders on hogs..
