Hatfields and Mcoys are on

That dirty Uncle Jim killed McCoy's brother for wearing a union jacket, after shooting one guy on a trail for being an old union soldier. Darn I wish they would be more accurate on details, was good movie. I think on pawn stars one of their rifles was sold, they said 13 were killed in the fued. LOL funny how fast many died after the fued was over.

I watched all 3 episodes and did a fair mount of research after watching the first episode. I was amazed at how accurate they actually were baed on historical records.

Quote:A lot of important stuff missing. I figured they would Hollywood it. No mention of union battles, no mention of coal, no courthouse steps murders. I'm a little disappointed. The Hollywood version of a true story is usually disappointing when you read into the history books instead of the script.

In my research, I didn't find anything on "courthouse step murders" or "coal". The Hatfields were actually in the timber business not coal.

I was also amazed at how they found actors that closely resembled the real life person.

I think some have confused the war on the mountain over coal and the first union of sorts with the Hatfield feud. They were two separate things.Sort of in the same part of the country. The redneck came from the red bandanna one of the sides wore in the coal fight against the hired gunmen that came in to put down the strike.I'm thinking this happened after WWI because a machine gun was used in the battle on the mountain. It is known as the Something mountain war,I want to say Baker mountain but I just can't remember right now.
Edit:The killing on the courthouse steps was in this war as well not the Hatfield deal.In both cases however there were people not fighting that were instigating the fighting for their own agenda. They were the ones that needed hanging.

Shootist you may be thinking of the Battle of Matewan, sometimes called the Matewan Massacre, which occurred in the vicinity of the Hatfield/McCoy feud. However most of the H/M guys were dead by this time. It occurred in May of 1920.\

Another notable coal war occurred about a year later and is deemed to be the largest armed uprising since the Civil War. It is known as the Battle of Blair Mountain.

Both were notable and tragic. That particular region seems to have problems playing well with others. It is difficult to separate the details and the players from these three events.

Yellowhammer, I agree there are amazing similarities in the real photos and the actors. But dang, Bad Frank has to be a relative of the actor. He's a dead ringer.

AZ,there has been a lot of stuff like the feud and the coal wars in this region that was never recorded. Not as big,and not as many killed maybe but bad business anyway.
I was born in Sleepy Hollow at the end of the road, well there was one more house after ours so almost the end. The next road down is Gap Creek. There was a lot of stuff went on there back in the 30s/40s.It mostly happened before my time but I remember some of the people and know the kids of those people who are my age.One thing that happened was one of my friends was laying on the bed with his brother and their dad playing one sunday morning and someone shot his father through the window and killed him.Another thing was a man who was sort of the Boss of the "business" that went on then had a grudge against another man who was a constable.Boss was mad at him and made his girlfriend drive him to his house.A few words were spoke then Boss went for his pistol which he always had in the glove box.He always had a Owl Head Colt 32,and it had been used. This time the pistol was not in the glove box where it was supposed to be and the constable shot and killed him. "They" said his girlfriend was scared of him and might have took his pistol in hopes he would meet his end so she could get away. That slowed things down on Gap Creek quite a bit,but some of those feelings live on to this day a little with some.

I loved the show. I find that I like a lot of K. Costner's work. I am ashamed that as an American, I don't know more 'American history'. I am one of those folks that simply cannot remember all the names, dates, places & tiny details to keep it all straight. I wish there were more historical movies made now instead of so much pure garbage. With the technology that is available, I would like to see more of our very rich history made or 'remade' into the type of movies that can be produced today. Movies that are researched and accurate, not "Hollywoodized" versions. I don't mean it has to be a 'bare bones only' doccumentary, but at least still recognizable as well as entertaining.----Ben Jimmy

Wasn't there a Sid Hatfield the town constable of Matewan that was gunned down on the courthouse steps after the coal war there? Shot like seventeen times and nobody was brought to trial for the murder. There is a movie about the coal war at Matewan.
