havahart traps and coyotes

Can anyone tell me the trick, if any, to get a coyote in a havahart trap. I have a large trap that I set every night, I bait it with dry dog food and the coyote's are all over it but just will not go inside. Last night I had the most track ever but instead of going in the trap they just seemed to scratch as much snow and leaves as they could inside the trap. Any idea's will help,
thanks

there is no trick i've heard of. the only trick is to have dumb coyotes. very few have been caught in cages.

Look HERE for some info. One thing the article points out is that they felt it was absolutely necessary to cover the metal on the floor of the trap. May be a start for you. Human scent may also be making them leery.

The best way (but not easiest) for you to catch coyotes is to get the ridiculous Mass. trapping laws changed back to something remotely reasonable. Box and cage traps only??? That sucks! Good luck.

The laws in this state have caused more problems then they could have ever solved, all voted in by a bunch of cityits that have no understanding of wildlife and the damage that can be caused. In my neiborhood there are families that worrie about there kids playing in the yard because of the coyotes, they just walk around like they are the guy next doors lab.

eider1 - I feel for you. I did a little research last night and just found out that as a non-resident I can't even buy ammunition in your state! That is one screwed up law and another eye opener for those that think it will never happen in their state. Good luck.
