A buddy of mine sent me this pic asking about the black antler. It’s a buck that frequents his brother’s place in Maryland. It’s a ritzy gated community apparently. Anyone ever seen this before?

I think it had some kind of injury to the blood supply to the velvet. It died and hardened and turned black.

Good answer. I would think that you are spot on.

Sounds reasonable. I can't remember what the circumstances were, but do remember finding remains of a small buck with somewhat black antlers due to shriveled up velvet remains on his antlers.

Another thing I noticed, look at the size of the scent glands on his rear hocks.

I hope those are his scent glands. You may not know this yet, but when you get much older, things don't always hang the way they used to.

Ha, I doubt that I will get much older (86) but, I am well aware of that fact!

Skull/hair between the horns looks odd, not a slight curve. If not Ai, than he got into some liquid (oil) substance? Likely fake.

I don’t think so. My friend’s brother sends him quite a few pics of nice bucks roaming around his place. Here’s another pic of the same buck in a different spot on a different day. This was prior to the first pic. Still has velvet on brow tine of left antler in this pic. I agree it looks a little odd in the first pic, but perhaps that is an injury that caused the odd coloration?
