Having trouple grouping 55gn vmax outof my Tikka 22 250.

1 I am having trouple grouping 55gn vmax outof my tikka 22 250. Groups range from 3\4 inch to 2 1/2 inches. Other bullets that I am shooting (between the 55gn vmax groups) like 46gn win hp and 5ogn rem clhp seem to shoot good (almost allways cover with a penny). Has any one else had problems with 55gn vmax in a tikka ?

These are sugestions found on this site can you help me perform them?

1 Is the barrel free floated properly?

(I can run a dollar down to a point about 3 inches ahead of the action is this ok or should it be floated right down to the action on a tikka?)

3 Have you re-torqued the action screws?

(what should the screws be torqued to?)

I realy would appreciate any advice you guys can give me that might help me in any way.

Thanks Jim

check the c.o.l on both bullet types. it may or may not be touching the lands.........refer to the reloading manual for proper c.o.l. need to know twist rate.

The answer is don't use the Hornady 55 gr Vmax. If you have other bullets the gun shoots well use those. Had the same exact problem with a friends Remington 700 using these bullets.

I switched him to Sierra and they shot accurately. Sometimes a gun just doesn't like a particular bullet.

I have the same rifle and never could get 55 V-Max's to shoot worth a darn. 1-1/2" to 2" was the best I could do. Almost sold the gun I got so discouraged. Switched to Berger's 55 grain match and gun now shoots consistant 3/4" groups. I'm using H380 and WW primers.

I believe that the 55gr Vmax's are right on the edge of stability with a 1-14 twist rifle like the Tikka.

The plastic tip, and the boat tail make longer then the typical 55 gr bullet. You may have more luck with something like the Nosler ballistic tip which should be shorter since it has no boat tail (just guessing though.) Hornady doesn't list bullet lenght on their web site, but Nosler list theirs at 0.810"

EDIT: Noslers are boat tailed as well sorry.

I don't have problems with the Hornady 55gr VMax in my tikka t3 22-250. Shoots under an inch. It likes the remington 50gr Accutips a little better.

My friends tikka 22-250 liked the 50 gr's better. Im not sure what the twist rates are on the varmints but it was a noticeable difference in groups.

My Tikka likes 55 gr soft points making decent groups.
It shoots the 45 hp Winchester well.
50 gr accutips and combined technology.

Not any surprise that the Sako likes them too.

Yesterday I shot a group with the 55gn vmax It was just over 1 inch at 100yds.

I had 6 berger vld s loaded with 36.5 gns of varget I shot a 3 shot group but when I checked the target there was only one hole. I hoped that they were all in one hole but could not be sure so I went back and tried 2 more. I now had what I knew was a 5 shot clover leaf that I could easily compleatly cover with a the case head. I was shooting off my deck with a folding table and not real good sand bags so I know there was lot of luck involved lbut it was snot hard to decide that this might be th bullet for my gun.

After this I tried one more group with the 55 vmax and again it was about 1 inch.

Now I am trying to find more berger vld bullets in southern Saskatchewan.

Thank you guy very much for your help Jim

P.S.

If any one knows the answer to the following two questions I would appreciate it.

1 Ican run a dollar down to a point about 3 inches ahead of the action is this ok or should it be floated right down to the action on a tikka?

2 what should the action screws be torqued to?

I realy would appreciate any advice you guys can give me that might help me in any way.
