Help make my uppers new york friendly - Cutting a2?

I got two new jse uppers coming in friday!

They come with a2 flash hiders which New York frowns apon

I had jse remove them and include them, but I still have to deal with the threads which NY also frowns apon.

So my options are;

1. Somehow remove the threads
2. Buy a muzzle break / thread protector and pin + weld
3. Cut the a2 to a thread protector, and pin + weld

I'd like to go with route 3. Has anyone cut off the A2 flash hider to make a thread protector out of it? I figure I'd drill and tap it and pin it to the barrel and silver soider a bead over the screw.

Any input?

Just be sure that if the barrels are very close to, or less than a full 16" that what ever you do to deal with the threads is "permanent" to meet the Federal laws...

While the state may "frown" on flash hiders, they are legal as far as Federal BATF barrel length requirements...

You can always replace the flash hider with a Levang type muzzle brake to keep the proper length that will direct the muzzle blast forward rather than upward...

Permanent flash diffusers are usually pinned and welded on the bottom and the weld just needs to be ground off to allow the pin to drop out before unscrewing the diffuser..If it is replaced by something else, the replacement needs to be secured in the same fashion...

Non-permanent treatments do not need to be replaced with permanent attachments...

Actually after the blast coming off the side of my A2 Flash Hider blew the outside rear view mirror off of my vehicle I had my machinist buddy chuck it in his lathe and cut the ports off of the front of my A2 Flash Hider making a thread protector out of it. I later replaced it with a Black River Tactical Covert Comp which directs all of the gases forward.

More recently I had him do the same thing to a Miculek Comp for my 6.8 SPC DPMS Lite Hunter. Worked great.

I do not know about permantently attaching one as I have not had to do that.

Like someone else I think said already, make sure your barrel is not 14.5 inches and the flash hider made it the legal 16. If the barrel is 14.5 a thread protector or cutting the flash hider wont cut it.

I would go with a Kies compensator which directs muzzle blast forward which I assume doesnt cause the ear crushing thump of a brake.

I would also weld a spot over the pin instead of solder. Thats just me cause I wouldnt want to have to heat the barrel up hot enough for silver bearing solder to flow.

when I do my NY builds I always buy a barrel without threads. 1. I dont like the deafening blast from a brake when hunting with no ear protection. 2. Dont like the looks of the Kies compensator.

Do yourself a favor and go with a Keis style linear comp. I had a 16in target crown and that thing was just plain loud, very uncomfortable for predator hunting without ear protection (not the best idea but I like to hear them coming). I rebarreled to a lighter 16in but this time with the linear comp. WOW what a difference! Much more tolerable even at the range with berms. Also less muzzle blast/flash than a target crown, IMO your best option.

Hearing them coming today generally means not hearing a semi with jake brake and air horn blaring tomorrow. Wear your ears.

Having said that i threaded a bolt barrel a while back to test the levang. Even in the full length barrel it was a noticeable difference in how i perceived the blast. No where close to being hearing safe, but better.

Hmmm...you are kind of stuck. Unless you remove the threads, you are still not state law compliant, unless you weld on a compensator or cut down a flash hider.

I would cut down the A2 flash hider AND crown it....you will still need to weld in place.

Is it state/local law, or just a suggestion?
