I'm kind of old school, I'd build a dedicated pd gun for 90% of my shooting, 20P, 204, 223/223AI and a fast twist big gun for LR. Both would be HB, no sense messing with a sporter barrel when you shooting small stuff off a rest. I wouldn't mess with a 22-250 for new LR PD rig but go to a modern sharp shouldered 224 or 6mm twisted for heavies.
I guess this thread is playing on my mind. I had a dream last night about prairie dogs being here in S.C.!!! thousands of them all over the place LOL.
I've only been west of the Mississippi river about 8 times and only for work. I've never seen one in person. I grew up in KY and we had plenty of ground hogs. The long range gun of choice was 243 back then. A 400 yard kill was not uncommon. Of course we didn't have all of the fast twist, heavy for caliber options back then. I guess that's why I don't buy into that now. I agree with AWS on building a rig for a specific job. Of course for me it would be on a Savage action.
