Good to see that you got it out without serious damage to much of anything other than your pride. The cleaning rod came out in better shape than I expected. But that rod ain't a cheap one either .... looks like a $30 lesson to me. I don't know if I'd say the advice didn't work, the penetrating oil must have helped there somewhere.
Where was the patch? I wonder if you were within an inch or so of it comming out the muzzel. Without the handle on the rod you might have been able to drive it out .... but I would have done it the way you did. I'm glad all turned out well!
