help on purchasing a recurve

Two positive things I can think of:

Portability, and the fact that you can have additional sets of limbs in different lengths and draw weights.

The only negative I can think of is the fact that the takedown system usually adds a little to the carrying weight of the bow, but that's not always a negative.

A quality takedown locks up as tight as a one-piece bow.

Great info right there. In my opinion there are no cons to buying a takedown over buying a one piece. Spend the extra, you won't regret it.

How old is that Bighorn, is that back when G Fred Asbell owned the company. And the Nelson Brothers were building them with Fred. If so that bow is worth some money. I own a custom bighorn made about 6 years ago or so when Bud Boker owned the company, he died and Ron Nelson finished it. Ron Nelson built a lot of beautiful bows for Big Horn.

At one point i believe both Nelson brothers built bows for bighorn. I talked to Ron a number of years ago when he tried to run the company after Bud Boker died, he had mentioned at one point either he or his brother worked for Fred. It's too bad that company changed hands so many times. They used to built some of the nicest bows. I don't know if yet another person is running the company again. One thing for sure , your bow is worth some dough. I would love to see a picture of it.

Back when Fred owned Bighorn they made some fine bows at reasonable prices. At that time Ron Nelson was his right hand man but AFAIK he was not a partner in the biz. Some time Later a guy named King Cavalier bought the biz and sold them along with his very expensive line of camo clothing. The price of the bows went through the roof.I never paid attention to what has happened with the bows since.

Ron and his brother who's name escapes me, bothe built bow for bighorn, I don't think they were partners for Fred, just bowyers.

I had a pse takedown recurve about 8 years ago. I was alright, a bit heavy, and the grip was way to fat for my liking.

I've tinkered with the PSE's and they just didnt lite my fire for some reason.

Been try'n to get my hands on one of the Hoyt game masters for a while, they seem to be one of the more popular metal riser recurves go'n today, thers 2 or 3 of the Hoyts, the game masterI and II, and the diablo (if I remember), ussualy aint to hard to find used.

For the money I think the martin recurve would be your best bet for a new recurve in that price range. If want to spend about $700 on a great custom recurve that cost over $1000. Let me know I'm selling one of my bears paw lightspeed. Takedown.
