help on small game rifle(update, is this a good deal?)

ok thanks everyone for the replies! i like the savage he has, but i would like to have a bolt action rifle. that is a good buy on that rifle though im pretty sure.

my shots will be inside of 50 yards everytime.

If you decide not to buy the Savage rifle, tell your buddy that I will buy it for the 100.00. My son is going to need a full size .22 and so is my little girl. So if you decide not to buy it, I will.

You might want to consider getting the same action type as whatever your centerfire big-game rifle is (if you have one). Then the .22 will double as a dandy year-round practice and training rifle for deer season.

That consideration aside, my preferences (being an old smallbore bullseye shooter) run toward higher-end bolt-actions with really good triggers and match or semi-match chambers. With high-quality ammo the accuracy will amaze you. If you can find an old Remington 541-S sporter or Browning/Winchester Model 52 sporter, you will be spoiled rotten for the rest of your life.

Not sure who makes a similar rifle today though. The CZ rimfire bolt gun may be a contender.

If you wasnt really set on getting a bolt action I would look into finding a used Marlin Model 60. You could even get a new one for under $200. I have never shot a 10/22 that could compare to the accuracy of my Model 60 and it performs as should each and everytime I take it out. Have fired well over a 1000 rounds through it without cleaning and shoots just as good as it does clean. Also if you were interested in a .17 hmr I couldnt tell you which one of those to get bc I have only shot the one I own and it is accurate as can be. Someone was saying that it would be too much gun for squirrel bc the inside would follow the bullet out. Take head shots only and that wont be a problem. You can pretty much ruin the rib meat on a squirrel shooting .22lr as well. As for the rifle your buddy has, $75 aint too much to spend on any gun im my opinion if its functions properly and in good shape. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Josh
