I just bought a remington 510 .22 and took it out to put some rounds through it amd the bolt jammed when i was trying to release the empty shell. When i try to push the bolt up to extract the shell it kind of sticks about 3/4 through pulling the bolt up and theni can push it up the last 1/4 of the way but it taked a little muscling through it before i can pull it back. I dont know how long the gun has been sitting befor i bought it but the bolt needs to be oiled but should that take care of the issue? Or dose this spund like a bigger problem. All i know is that the bolt really is not moving smoothly and i have to figure out how to make it one smooth motion. Any ideas or knowledge would help. Thanks

I'm not positive on what you mean, but I think the 510 bolt is pretty much the same as my 512 bolt and they aren't smooth. Just the way they work.

Sorry if i didnt explain it very well but what i ment was after i fired a round and go to pull up the bolt, i can pull it up about 3/4 of the way before it feels like its getting caught on somthing. Then i have to use a bit of force to pop the bolt up the rest of the way before i can pull it back and release the empty shell. The bolt menuvers very rough at times and i was trying to figure out how to make it operate more smoothly. Anyone have suggestions?

IF... IF you feel comfortable with a little mechanical work (basement gunsmithing) I would suggest a complete disassembly and cleaning of the bolt and receiver. Schematic disgram and assembly/disassembly instructions are probably available on the internet. Good clean and proper lube just might resolve the issue.

It might need a good cleaning, when you're pulling the bolt up after you fire a round you're re-setting the firing pin. My 512 is stiff there but not to bad.

I dont know if i feel comfortable with taking the whole bolt assembly apart as i have never done it before and i live in an apartment with little kids that take my attention and i could loose track of parts/how to put it back together. Any rough idea of how much it might cost to bring it in and have it proffesionaly cleaned? Also, do you think its an internal problem inside the assembly or could i do a good exterior bolt and action cleaning and oiling. Would that help?

I'd guess it's years of oil/gunk inside. You can always give it a good external cleaning and see if it helps, won't hurt.

Thanks for the help, also i didnt metion earlier that i did not clean or oil it it before i fired it and here in minnesota it was about 5 degrees outside and i dont know if the cold could have affected it.

I suggest using a stripper and then re-oil it. My 512 isnt smooth by any means but it will shoot. I loved shooting it but open sights and my eyes dont work together any more. I cant stand the thought of drilling and tapping. My plan is to give it to my son. That little gun has killed a truck load of squirrel and coon and who knows what.

I liked my open sights and didn't want to have it drilled and tapped but finally I decided to have it done. I honestly don't care how much I possibly killed the value of it. I don't ever plan on parting with it.

With the scope I seen just how much better that old rifle could shoot. It's nice.

I know I could do it and still carry it. But it will never leave my family, it was my first rifle dad got it for my 14th Christmas. And I could shoot it until I turned about 28. It is kind of funny I used to make fun of dad for not being able to shoot open sights and it hit me like a truck. I had Lasik surgery a year ago and hoped it would help but no luck. Dad still has his favorite 22 as well even if he cant shoot it a Remington Nylon 66. He bought it back in the 70's for either 25 or 40 bucks. I seen 4 of them on the used rack at Cabelas 2 years ago all were priced at 399.99. I called dad and told him he couldnt believe it. So, it will become a family heirloom as well.

I bought mine already drilled and tapped for a side mount. Got it last week for 125.00 at a hole in the wall gun shop. I cleaned the action and bolt assembly with gun scrubber and then lightly oiled it. Totally fixed the sticky bolt issue.
