wanting to go to a 6.5 . but not really sure which gun to go with ,,, It will be used to coyote hunt and shoot steel at 1000 yards .. So my question is which gun to go with and which scope would be best for the duel job ?? i will be new to the 1000 , but have been busting yotes at 300 with a 22-250.. The 6.5 really seems to be a great all cal. .. But what do i need to start with ??? thanks a lot for your time ...

Well.......most people chasing coyotes want something fairly light. Most people shooting 1000yds USUALLY want a very stable rifle and go super heavy (meaning F-class). So, you got both ends of the stick. If its just shooting 1000yds once in a while for fun then a full blown F-class is probably not what you are looking for. Like Tim was saying, whats your budget? I sold a Savage single shot to a friend and he changed the caliber with a CBI barrel to 6.5CM. Cost of the rifle and a barrel he's into it for a grand with out optics. And I cut him a screamin deal on the rifle. LOL (Note- the Savage is a heavy weight too. Not one to carry all day chasing coyotes.)

I have a ruger hawkeye predator 6.5 with the 2 stage trigger. It is my main deer rifle and is not to bad to tote around. Shoots great with h4350 and berger 130. It however does not have alot of aftermarket stocks or accessories. My other 6.5 is the ruger precision gen 2 and its topped with a vortex pst 6-24. It is an awesome tool. Have only taken it out to 200 yds so far but i could almost cover 5 shots with a quarter. Saying that its a little heavy to tote around. Savage also has a new 6.5 to compete with the ruger precision and it has gotten some decent reviews at snipershide.com

For the money i feel its hard to beat a ruger american predator in 6.5 and you would have money left over for optics. Again its all about what your budget is.

I jus bought a savage axis ii xp with a heavy barrel in 6.5 creedmoor and it shoots really good. Ended up being $325 after rebate. Got it at dicks sporting goods.

As well as it may shoot, I don't think this is the platform to stretch to 1000 yards.

I had a Ruger Predator in 6.5CM. With a vanilla 3-9x40 Nikon 1000yds is completely do-able with factory match ammo if your target is a 2'x 2' steel gong. Is it repeatable? I wouldn't compete for the smallest group, but you'll hit the target.

Sold the Ruger for the Savage 11/111 Trophy in 6.5CM and factory shoots better over the weight spectrum. The Ruger liked the 129grn, the Savage shoots anything from any manufacturer equally well.

Just ordered the Savage Stealth in 6.5CM, same action but blueprinted, with a threaded barrel, and chassis. I suspect it should hold better groups at farther distances.

If I was going to hunt with one regularly, it would be Ruger, then the Savage 11/111. For coyotes, the 6.5 may be too much at close distances.

I shoot both the RPR and the stealth there fine rifles.I have shot both at 600 and they shoot well with my reloads. The stealth is not that heavy and is available for under 1000.00.The RPR is a bit more but hard to find in 6.5 unless you do the gun broker deal for big bucks!

If you had to choose between the two, which would you choose?

I had the same idea for a rifle, and bought a Tikka CTR in .260 Rem. I worked up loads for 95 Vmax and 123 Amax that had the same POI at 100 yards. One load for coyotes and one load to reach out there for long range steel. I put a 4x16 FFP Vortex Viper PST on top, and took it hunting. I found the super thin reticle at 4x didn't suit me for coyote hunting. Missing 3 coyotes on my first 2 stands was proof enough for me! I put the rifle away and used my 22-250 with a 4x16 SFP Vortex for the rest of the hunt. When I got home I switched scopes and put Vortex 4x16 on top of the Tikka this one with SFP. I have yet to take the Tikka out for another hunt. I believe it would work satisfactorily, and could prove to be a dual purpose rifle, but as it turns out I don't need a dual purpose rifle. I spent a bunch of dollars to figure it out, but I'm going to stick with purpose built rifles. 22-250 for coyotes, and .260 to sling lead at targets with my FFP scope. That's a long story to try and explain where I got, but when you have stuff that works, why try and stretch it? Each tool for its purpose. There is one more opinion to consider anyway, good luck with your project!

That's a hard choice pyschodog but I suppose I would go for the stealth over the rpr.The difference in weight of the two rifles would be my best guess. The stealth is 2 lbs. lighter but sitting at the bench they both weigh the same.

Sounds to me like the 22-250 could stay in the yote gunning role then specialize on a new 6.5 CM paper shooter to go 1000.
Then the 6.5 CM (or 260) could be as heavy as you want to spend the $$ for, ie, long heavy barrel, like 26".

Is there a difference in accuracy? I had an RPR in 243 but have always wondered about the Savage.
