Henderson Hunter Looking For Help!

I'm here in Henderson, NV and new to the Predator Masters. I have lived in Vegas for over 5 years now and I am just now finding the time to go Coyote hunting again. I went once last year with some luck just north of Vegas near Nellis air force base. We called just one in and got him. Anyways, I was starting to think I was the only one in Nevada that cared to hunt coyotes. Well at least in the south part of the state. If you know of any good places to go with out giving away your secrets spots I would love to know. Also do you know if a lot of coyote hunter hunt near Las Vegas. I called a ton in two days up near Mt. Charleston with no luck. Well we got one but we didn't call it in. Just came a crossed him. If you have any ideas for me that would be great.

I have done most all of my hunting in Colorado, but I learned how to hunt in AZ. So desert hunting isn't completely unfamiliar too me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks so much for your help in advance
Hound

Sorry to the few people I PM'd this same post to.

Welcome to Predator Masters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif There's a few guys from your area on the board. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, one in particular who just loves to take new guys out and show them all his spots. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know that no one is going to show me their spots. I just ment a general direction I could head in. I was also looking for others who might want to go. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That was sort of an inside joke for another Hendersonite. Actually, there are about 6-7 members in the Vegas area. Just give them time to see your post and you'll probably be hearing from someone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I've got a buddy that lives in Henderson now. He's a life long hunter though he's never been a coyote hunter. I've been trying to get him to go since he's retired and has the time and loves to hunt. He's had good luck in NV with big game but he's missing out by not doing any pred hunting. If you'd like, I'll send you his info and you can give him a call. I've sent him this post in hopes of motivating him. Best of luck.

Hound,

I also live in Henderson. I'm relatively new to the area, but not to calling (30 plus years off & on). I've been busy with work since I've been here, so I have only recently had a chance to get out in the bush ( oops, wrong term for this area ). The beauty is that there is a lot of public land here in Nevada so once you get out of the valley, access is better than most places I've lived. We are very very fortunate.

I did a little Pre-Season warming up in non-hunting areas in or near town just for fun. Interesting results.

I was fishing on Lake Mead with the wife a couple nights this summer & lip squeaked a few coyotes in when the stripers weren't biting, but we cant shoot in there.

I was working nights this fall and heard some coyotes making a racket a few times near where I work ( outskirts of Henderson ). I went out east of the bird viewing area where I heard them and called a few nights later after work ( o-dark thirty AM ). No coyotes, but I can now confirm to you that there are bobcats in brushy areas close to town.

I've been mostly scouting a couple hours north. I found some lion tracks in the bottom of a sandy gully when I was out on xmas day. I've never actually seen one in the wild, but looking at the size of the tracks, it puts a little pucker factor into night calling. I won't tell you where I found them, but I'm getting a lion tag next week. I've always been interested in cats since my first bobcat encouters in NW Missouri.

I usualy hunt alone, but would entertain some joint expeditions depending on the individual. I'm a bit picky until I know someone's gunhandling competence (nothing personal). I've got a Fox Pro, hand calls, etc. I'm trying get out at least once this weekend. Let me know and we can BS a little.

Sako222,

Thanks for the reply and info. You say you work on the outskirts of Henderson. If you don't mind me asking, where do you work? I also work on the outskirts (Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas)I hear and see the same three pesky Coyotes about 2-3 a month. I called them in once when I was just seeing if I had lost my calling touch. Seriously it wasn't even 3 mins and they were honestly 10 feet from me. I hadn't brought a gun and I parked right in the middle of the road. I had no idea they were that close. I wasn't in camo no scent cover or anything I got off work drove in and parked. got out walk 50 yards from the road and sat and called. I was so excited. I started to get a little worried though after they didn't leave and they were getting closer. All I had was a ball point pen and some rocks. I wish someone would have been with me because this sounds like I made it up. But I swear as god as my witness I hit one with a rock.... It was so crazy. They didn't even leave right away. The one I hit Jumped up and ran a few feet but the others just stood there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Stupid Uneducated Coyotes! I haven't gone back since just because I didn't want to be the one who gave them an education. But I have still seen them. Too bad you can't hunt on the Las Vegas WASH! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I'm off work on Mondays and Tuesdays. I work graveyard so morning hunts are cool with me. Let me know... PM me back

Sako222, Sounds like a great gun/caliber. Welcome to Predator Masters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Maybe we'll see you in Globe at the PM hunt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hound I knowther are some folks down in your area cuz they have come up here to play with us at some of the dog derbys last year ther was 2 teams they wher a lot of fun.

Hound,

Vegas Wash is also where the cats are. I work off of Sunset east of Boulder higway. I'm on days now though.

I believe your account of the behavior of "tame" coyotes. Years ago one came out and was eating some picnic scraps in a Chicago area forest preserve. Some Vegan bonehead was about 100 yards away with his off-leash Fu Fu dog. I mentioned to him that he may want to put fluffy in the car and pointed at the coyote. He looks at me and says " oh, they're harmless"./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Whatever.

I was out this morning off of 93 on Kane springs road. Not a bad area, lots of people hunting quail up there though, so it was pretty busy. Had one come in like he was on a string, until he dropped into a brushy depression. I think he got around into my scent cone as I lost sight at that point. I guess he wasn't a tame one like they have in the parks. I'll PM you In the next couple of days.

Redfrog, Thank you. This is my second Sako. This one is a Vixen with the Manlicher Stock. Got some bad bore pitting though so I've got to pull the cool Bofors Barrel off and fire up the lathe. I'll match the profile & keep it a Deuce but it won't be the same. Had to take the evil black rifle this morning. Love those L-46's though.

I live in las vegas, off of Ann and 95 I've lived out here 28 years, hence my age. I know of a couple spots, going out tomorrow (saturday) with my dad, of vegas.

I wouldnt mind meeting up one weekend for a night hunt. Let me know the next trip and visa versa.

Tim

Near Las Vegas there are a couple of areas that coyotes are easy to find. Near golf courses(particularly Lake Las Vegas, Dragon Ridge and Boulder Creek)and all around Lake Mead and the Colorado River. The thing these have in common is you can't hunt.

My buddy and I went to sight in rifles off south LVBLVD a few weeks ago and we ran across six of them. We've sighted rifles out there for years(I've been here 30) and haven't ever seen anything living. Now that the area is posted "no shooting" we see six coyotes as we're driving down the dirt road.

If you guys ever want to put together a group hunt in our area, please count me in.
