I drove out to check a spot that would work for the SW wind that night. It is a rectangular pasture that borders a gravel road to the south, woods to the east, and standing corn to the north. I like to set up the the fence that borders the corn, but found the farmer had chopped the 1st 50 yards of corn.
I figured it would work just as well to get tight to the standing corn. As I was getting set up, a group started howling from the woods to the SE. I hurried up to get my shit together, and run the caller down their direction in the field. Once back, I let out several howls, & within 3-4 minutes here comes three up the ditch heading my way.
I keyed in on the leader, and tried a whistle to stop him, but it prompted him to head straight towards me. I dropped him on the spot, then moved to find another. That one was cutting to the right, & I was in a panic to get the tripod moved to catch up, & managed two sound shots for my troubles. No idea where #3 went, but most likely baled into the corn.
I swung back over to #1 in time to see him get up & head for the corn. Made a great last second shot, & piled him up, only to see him get back up & into the corn! After a bit, I walked down trying to find where he went in the corn. I went back & forth several times, then out into the field figuring there had to be a bunch of blood where I had shot him. Zip. Then back to the corn's edge a couple more passes. I couldn't believe I couldn't find a single drop of blood. Piss on it, I give up.....
One last pass back towards my gear, low & behold, I saw a small blood swipe on a corn stalk. I followed the swipes in about 6 rows & found him piled up.
