Hevi-Shot hulls splitting

I was shooting #4 Hevi-Shot out of my 20 ga. Benelli Nova today and noticed that 3 out of 4 hulls split halfway down the shell! They were 3" mags out of a 3" chamber, so that's not the problem. Anyone had this happen, it isn't serious is it, I really love these shells, my gun patterns awesome with them.

Are they older stock shells? When Hevi-Shot began with their own brand of shells they had some hull problems. The Dead Coyote loads would loose their crimp and allow the buffer to leak out of the end of the hull. Hevi-Shot replaced those if a guy would send them in and got a handle on their QC. I haven't heard of any problems with their QC in a long time now.

There are several possibilities:

1. Your chamber could be oversize

2. The brass could be thin on the hulls

I would call the company and ask if there had been any other complaints or if there were a recall on that particular lot# of ammo.

Another point is that the upon firing a round, the brass may eject and leave the hull in the chamber or shoot the hull up into the barrel creating an obstruction for the next round fired.

Have you had problems in the past with any other brands of ammo splitting the brass, or is it a new gun with an unknown history?

If you have had no other problems with other brands of shells, then I would contact the ammo company and complain. More than likely, they will want to get that lot# out of your hands and give you some fresh ammo.

I would repeat to them my concern that you are afraid that the plastic part may shoot up into the barrel and form an obstruction, causing a barrel rupture on the next round fired which could cause injury or even death.

Good luck!

Hey! That's a good way to get some free Hevi-Shot! Do you think there could really be a problem?

You won't get free shells, it will be an exchange for what you've already purchased. Is there really a problem... Well yea, you said the hulls were splitting, so there is a problem of some sort.

I have fired thousands....and I do mean thousands, of shotgun shells. Both factory loads and my own reloads. Days & days at the sheet range & many days of dove, duck, & goose hunting. Over all those years, I have NEVER had a hull split. And believe me, we loaded some STIFF duck & goose loads.

Call them ASAP. And don't fire any more of those loads in your shotgun.

I'm sorry that I mis-read your post. If the plastic hull is splitting, then there is a problem with the quality control from the manufacturer.

I do not believe that there would be an issue with safety, however, just wasted hulls that are not worth reloading. If you are not reloading, then I think that you are wasting your time and worrying about nothing.

To the contrary......

I studied shotshell reloading and reloaded for many years. Hull splitting is NOT something to just disregard. There is either an issue with the plastic material of the hull, the manner in which the shot column is loaded in the hull, or even possibly an omission of a component in the shot column. ANY of these factors (and other possibilities that I won't address) could cause a very dangerous situation. Shooting any shotshell that displays any type of conditions that would not be considered "normal" should be considered as dangerous. While the manufacturer will most likely NOT display any fault verbally, you can bet your last dollar that they will not just shrug this situation off. They're smart enough to know that this is NOT an acceptable situation and will replace the unused rounds ASAP and with no hesitation.

I wouldn't shoot them in my guns if the hulls were splitting. That is abnormal behavior and I would contact the manufacturer and explain the situation and see if they would be willing to recitify the situation somehow. Personally, I would be happy with full replacement, to include my shipping cost.
