Hevi Shot "Dead Coyote" Ammunition ?

Hi Byron,
What choke are you using for 4 buck? I killed two with my Remington Xtra full choke last year and it was positively devastating. But, both were close in. I shot a 30 yard target with that setup and the pattern was ugly. Are you using a modified or full? Or something else?
Thanks,
Jim

They just sent me three boxs (30 rounds) by the time I figured out which choke did the best. I only had one box left for hunting. I was shooting the patterns off handed and as you can tell the 30 and 50 yard target the center of the pattern was low. This I'm sure is my fault. I have been useing 3" #4 buck for years and it has been a great performer. My paterns with #4 are almost this good, but I believe the Hevi-Shot's denser patterns (41 vs 50 pellets), and deeper penatration, have me leaning to the Hevi-Shot. As you stated though, different shotguns/chokes prefer different loads.[/qb]

I was getting my best results with Winchester Supreeme 3" #4 buck using a Improved Modified. It made the most even consistent pattern. I have patterned many stotguns and most will preffer one choke and load over another. It can get expensive patterning your gun, but the confidence is well worht it.

Byron, you're absolutely correct. As an example when I was doing the pattern testing on my Benelli I had six (6) choke tubes and six (6) loads. My chokes were Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, Full, and the Kick's Gobblin Thunder extended ported at .660". The loads were from Remington, Winchester, and Federal in 2 3/4" Magnum and 3" Magnum .12 gauge number Four Buckshot.

In my gun the Federal 3" load out patterned all others. I had been using the same Winchester load you mentioned above in my Remington 870 with a modified barrel with good results. However, the Federal load was consistently the best throughout my test in all the chokes through this gun.

With that said, all the chokes didn't pattern the same. Modified was poor, Improved Modified was really quite good, then the factory Full blew the pattern and made it look about like the Improved Cylinder. The Kick's tube brought everything together and was head and shoulders above all the rest and actually shocked me how well it would shoot. I shot until I found the right combination. I did the same for my Dad's Mossberg 500. His also shoots the Federal Premium 3" the best and he uses a Hastings .660". It won't quite pattern as well as my set-up, but Dad knocks em' down with his.

I looked out the window this evening and there were two coyotes mousing in the field across the road from me. An adult and a pup. I couldn't take it. I grabbed the Benelli and called the pup across the field and into my barnlot where I smoked him at about 35 yards. Bang - FLOP! I love living in the country!!!

For any that may be interested I just recieved 2 boxes of the dead coyote ammo from Cabelas this week. I found it & the product number on their web site & ordered it over the phone. I get a bunch of their catalogs & have not seen it in any yet. The 3" was $20.99 a 10 round box I believe. At that price I plan to use a few to pattern and make the most out of the rest.

GC, Cabela's is to be one of the first out sources for the "Yote Load" and has been getting it in small quanities. I am sure that is why everyone is not seeing it to much. HS was still in the testing mode and has not gone to full blown loading of the product as of yet. If it works as well as I have seen so far it is pretty awesome! The only problem is cost. #4 Buck maybe the best source still! The problem in AR is we are not allowed to use #4 but the Yote Load meets requirements. I use #4 everywhere else allowed. For close range work, I would look into the HS waterfowl loads. They are pretty awesome as well. The right choke is the key to most of it as you well know.
