HK SL8 magazine hunting legal or modification

Does anyone else out there shoot an H&K SL8? If so do you have any ideas on how to modify the magazine (without surgery to the rifle) to make it hunting legal; that is, 4 or 5 shot capacity? I love the gun and I'd like to take it on a coyote trip up north. It's set up as my close range gun with a Leupold CQT, but it's illegal to hunt anything but pigs (considered livestock and not a game animal) here in Florida with the 10 shot magazine. I think the 10 shot mag is illegal even to shoot coyotes in most states. If mainekiller reads this, I'm particularly interested in the mag size rules there, as I am looking to buy a place in your neck of the woods (Bancroft). If anyone knows states where it is legal to shoot coyotes with a 10 shot magazine, I'd appreciate hearing. Nick R.

Most of our mag restriction here in colorado is based in the big game seasons, and not for small game. Firearms on an atv are the same way unless its changed in the last year.(that one is purley an interpetation thing) I have asked about both items at our local DOW office and I have been stopped by a couple DOW guys while hunting and had a 10 hanging out of the AR and they said nothing about it. For years all you have really needed here is a small game licence for yotes, now you need stamps too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif(way to get more money) There also is no season on them here, well Jan 1 to Dec 31st. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The rules change often and I need to get schooled up before the season starts this year.

Here in Iowa there is no magazine restriction for hunting varmints or predators.
What type of accuracy are you getting with that SL8?
I've got one that has yet to be fired.

It's very accurate. I haven't shot groups with high powered optics in several years with it because I have the CQT 3x on it, but just messing around with ammo choices yesterday it was shooting connected holes at 50yds. Nick

Thanks Jack. When all else failed, I read the manual, found out how to open the mag and made a piece of three eighths plywood to fit. Works great. Unfortunately I didn't cut out a space on the plywood to squeeze the body of the mag to bypass the little release catch, so it appears my modification is permanent. I have a spare so no utility lost and I'll know better the next time(?) I make one. Nick

It varies state by state I called our wild life and parks dept when I first started thinking about an AR for yotes. The guy I talked to said that since you can't get anything but ten round mags now, they were legal. (He was very much behind on resrictive gun laws, and what had sunset)I covered my self though since the first AR I built was 243 WSSM and the twenty round AR Mags only hold seven WSSM cases. My second build is in 458 Socom it will hold ten in a thirty round mag though. I am going to recheck a bit deeper before actually going after any big game. BTW Varments here can be shot with about any thing, and the feral hogs we have been getting are considered pests. But that is Kansas. Game and fish just acknowledged that they were even a problem two years ago, they just put a regulation in that you can onle shoot them if you are the property owner or are helping the property owner control pests.

Legal to hunt with hi-cap mags in Indiana.

Raidman- I cleaned mine for years without a guide. It's a little bit of a pain, but if you take care cleaning up excess solvents it works fine. I bought one of Sinclairs bolt action rod guides for my 338s and now use it on the SL_8. Not a tight fit, but again, it works and I no longer have to poke around to get the rod in the chamber. If you're going to buy something, call Sinclair and ask for advice. They make guides for the AR-15 that will probably do fine. Good luck.Nick
