Hmr 17gr tnt or v-max? which is most destructive?

i've been using hornady and cci hmr ammo in 17grain v-max. both with similar results, ripping gophers open and giving pretty good flips. i see cci has the 17grain in tnt's. how do the tnt's compare to the v-max on tiny critters like gophers or magpies?

I will only us the v-max in my savage. They seem to shot the best. and the destructiveness is just fine for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Great results

The v-max is far more explosive. Google varmint al's .17 hmr test, good info and comparisons there. My gun hates the tnt, like 4" at 100 yards, but shoots .75" @ 100 with the v-max.

Another vote for VMax. I bought a box of everything (available) when I bought the rifle. I had the worst performance from the TNT. On some PD head shots, they acted like full metal jackets. Quite the oppsite with VMax.

ok thanks guys! yah i am definately impressed with the v-max, i just wondered how the tnt's were since i've never tried them. but now i dont think i will try them, might as well stick to whats working well for me already.

The Winchester 17gr VMax's are my favorite and they are really destructive.I have shot alot of prairie dogs with the VMax and CCI TNT's both, but the VMax bullets shoot better out of my gun so those are what I kill critters with. The TNT's dont seem to expand as rapidly but I did kill three starling with one shot with those bullets and I found out how destructive they are in the process.Three starling were croweded on a fence post so I tryed for a double and got a triple. The first one had a big hole in it the second one had half his body and the third one was a pile of feathers.I shot another starling with a VMax the other day and it looked like the third bird that was hit with the TNT so I think the VMax is more destructive.I know one thing they will both put a hurtin on a prairie dog and there aint very many that make it back down the hole after you hit them with either of the two.The CCI 20gr FMJs are a whole other story.

I shot the TNT when I first purchased my Savage 93R17, I shoot the v maxs now, mainly due to availability and shooting V maxes out of everything else I shoot, lol.

Like said above, check out varmint Al's pages, he has some great testing results on both.
