Hodgdon is changing IMR's cans to plastic jugs...

Hodgdon bought the IMR powder company earlier this year.

Hodgdon tells me that they will be changing the IMR metal cans to plastic bottles, much like the bottles that Hodgdon's powders currently come in. These new IMR "jugs" I guess you'd call them should start showing up by late summer or fall of 2004.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm verclempt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I like the tin cans, and their distinctive colors...

About time... The Hogden jugs fit my Harrell's powder dump, which is really nice and convenient. Sure hope the new IMR jugs fit the same. Heck, I wish ALL powder came in those same jugs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif .

Dan--I sympathize with you on the upcoming loss of the IMR cans and their distinctive colors. The drab black "jugs" however, do have some distinctive colors on their labels. I only have three different flavors of Hodgdon powder, but the H380 has purple as the main color on the label, Varget has distinctive orange bands at the top and bottom of the label with the word "VARGET" in red, and H4895 has distinctive green bands at the top and bottom of the label with "H4895" in white. Maybe they will do some special colors on the labels for the IMR powders? I guess we can only hope that for the folks who are addicted to the distinctive IMR can colors, that Hodgdon will try to ease them off their can color addiction gently /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Silverfox,

You're right, Hodgdon is going to make the IMR labels a bit more colorful--according to the guy I talked to.

Some advantages of the change will be the ease of putting the powder back into the can, but I've found that a transmission fluid funnel works great for getting IMR powder back into the cans.

Some other interesting things I learned: Hodgdon will be updating IMR's "conservative" load data, and we should see some healthier max charges in the future.

Also--something I'd already figured out for myself was confirmed, and that is that Varget and IMR 4064 have practically the same burn rates. Another thing I did not know was that Hodgdon's Benchmark is aimed at the IMR 3031 niche, and should work well anywhere the 3031 does.

Maybe it won't be so bad. I still miss the old Winchester powder cans too though... Maybe I'm just too nostalgic. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I tell ya, I have no problems with jugs. In fact, I love jugs almost more than cans. A good can is hard to beat though. Maybe they should just change the shape.

I hate change. I find uses for the plastic jugs, nuts bolts etc. But the cans do stack neatly on the shelf, for compact storage. I see hodgdon came out with a 4 pack of 4oz cans of 4 different powders to work out a load. I think that was a great idea. I'll most likely save my old cans, and refill them when completely empty, and write the lot # on a piece of masking tape and put on the bottom of the can. I keep my powder in MTM dry boxes with the O-ring seal, and the cans really fit well. I don't think I could get as many hodgdon jugs in the containers.

The cans do waste a lot less space than the round jugs.

Bottom line; It is a lot cheaper to make a plastic jug than a metal can.

Of course even though they save money using the plastic jugs they will continue to sell at the same price /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm not sure what I like to handle better...........jugs or cans. I guess that same holds true with what I like to look at also. It sure would be a toss-up for me......sitting and reloading at my bench while whistfully gazing up now and then at a can or jugs. Decisions, decisions................ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Pardon me, but I have just had to chuckle a couple times when reading the comments about some of you fellows who can't make up their minds if they like "jugs" or "cans."

Am I the only "pervert" who knows the alternative meanings of the words "jugs" and "cans" or are some you others out there chuckling as you read some of these comments. If you know the alternative meanings, this last post by OU812 had me rolling on the floor:

varmint101--your statement had me rolling on the floor too. I was kind of wondering which definition you had in mind when you typed that one. I think I know what you had in mind now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
