Hog Hunting in Texas

Hello from Texas.

New to the site and thought I'd share one of hog hunting trip. It was a good day in the stand. Saw a few small deer but nothing big enough to shoot. As it got closer to dark I heard hogs in the brush. I got ready and sure enough a couple nice boars came out to the clear cut. They were pushing and hitting each other as they were walking along. I took aim and squeezed the trigger and saw hog get hit and bolt off. It only ran about 20 yards.

What caliber rifle, load and distance was the hog when you killed it?

Nice hog - I am planning on coming down to SW Texas in about a month. How big are the boards in the far south? Are they a bit smaller than the ones in N. Texas?

When I was hunting S. Tx hogs seemed smaller and not as fat. Though the biggest Boar I have seen on the hoof was in S Tx. He was every bit of 500 lbs. I have shot 200-300 lb hogs and the one I saw made them look small.

Good luck when you come down to hunt.

I was really wondering about that. I was thinking that N. Texas gets a little colder - hence bigger boars. Sounds like that may not be the case.

I too have a r-25 in .308.....had the tube shortened to 16" and put on an adjustable gas block. I rin a SDN-6 on it and it is super accurate. Love that gun. Great kill!

How does a guy find out where he can hunt hogs on a ranch that just wants to get rid of them? The things are a plague and it seems like everybody wants a ton of money to hunt them. On the other hand, I see them on videos being killed from choppers. Do the Game and Fish people have a list of ranchers that just want the things killed without charging an arm and a leg to do it? I would not mind paying someone if they had living quarters, but I can't understand someone complaining about all of the hogs and then charging a bunch of money for someone to kill them.

Most folks who have land with a hog problem would probably let you hunt if they knew you personally. In our litigious society no one is going to allow just anybody to run around their property day and night with guns unless they have some type commercial operation and make money off it.
Also it did not help when the law was approved to allow aviation/choppers to sell packages to anybody who is willing to pay for a training class and 600+ and hour to shoot them from the air. That caused a lot of land to be leased up just for ariel gunning of pigs.

Problem is most land is leased up for deer hunting/total year round hunting rights. So a land owner is not going to allow anyone to hunt pigs during the off season. Most land owners anyways. You will spend most of your trip asking to hunt with very little hunt. Those who offer pig hunting as a service are pushing volumes of hunters obviously for the cash. Keep in mind most of these outfitters promote large numbers of hogs. Hogs are not dumb. Hunting pressure makes them more skiddish than a whitetail sometimes.

There are still landowners who will allow people to hunt but very very hard to find.

Also, a lot of the people complaining about hogs do not have enough land to allow hunting. They may only have a few acres, and the hogs don't spend much time on their land, but when they do show up, they can destroy a lot of ground in a short amount of time and be gone.
