I am Seriously thinking about doing a Spear Hog Hunt and would like as much info as I can get on doing this. I have already found the spot and guide with the dogs. I need actual Hunt stories/ experiences and would LOVE to see some Videos!!! If you have any info on Good Spear Hunting Videos (Titles and where to buy) Please PM me.

I would LOVE to do the Knife thing BUT I have a bad foot and feel that being that close with NO way to retreat might be a bad idea. With a spear I feel I could control the situation a little better.

I have a spear I bought specifically for pig hunting. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, and I hope I get to, before I'm too old.

I've heard of some folks taking hogs with a spear in Argintina.

How long of a spear are you looking at? Going to throw it, drop down on top of them from up high, or use it as a lance????

Using a knife is no biggie. As long as you have good experienced catch dogs, and someone grabs the hogs back legs, you have no need to worry about being up close with a knife. Nothing like stickin' a squeelin' pig! lol

I am making a custom spear/ lance.... I am going to have the dogs distract the Boar and I'm going to stick him with it like a lance...... Don't think I'm gonna have anyone hold the legs just Skewer him and hold on for the ride!

FOsteology is right. If you have good catch dogs and someone with some experience with you, you can certainly do it with a knife. Being right in the mix of squeeling pig and barking and biting dogs IS pretty exciting.

It's only about 4' long. Made for close combat, not throwing. Just going to use it as a lance, like NEFP said. I've practiced on hay bales, but they aren't trying to eat me, either. I expect it'll be exciting enough. The blades sharp enough to cut paper.

Mind if I ask where you would purchase such a thing?
This would be kind of cool to do.

I found it at the Denver "Mile High" Flea Mart. There was a guy there that made knives and swords. I told him what I wanted and what I wanted it for. 5 weeks later I had my pig sticker.

I dont see the intrest in stabbing a pig while somebody holds its legs and a dog it tearing its throat out,I think i would rather shoot it with a handgun after the dogs have it at bay.Must be somekind of ego trip...

When I was much younger, a friend of mine and I killed a black bear with a knife. We run it with hounds and it bayed up in a brush pile. The dogs kept it focused on them and my friend and I got him from above. Thinking back on it, it wasn't very smart (and the bear was small, 135 lbs.). I killed a caribou in Alaska with a knife, that was pretty gory. There was a lady who saw it, she got sick and threw up. I didn't have much choice, it had been wounded bad in a front leg and I didn't have a gun. Killing a hog with a spear? I would like to be there, sounds like it could get real interesting.

I agree! I will have the dogs corner the Hog and then I'll stab it and hold on for the ride...... It will be close quarters and the Hog will have a Great chance to get me if I don't control it while its on the spear.... A LOT more Dangerous! A Lot more fair to the Hog.........

alot more fair to the hog?You are using a pack of mean [beeep] dogs to corner an animal while you stab it with a spear, how is that more sporting than taking one with a rifle?I dont see anything fair about it.

NONYA.... You said you would use dogs to hold a hog at bay and shoot it with a handgun...... Is that "Sporting"? The Hog has ZERO chance that way! Good to know its more "Sporting" to shoot a Hog at a safe range while being held at bay by some mean (BEEP) Dogs. At least I'll go toe to toe with it.......
What about the Poor Deer in your Avatar pic? Was it "Sporting" to shoot it when it didn't even know you where there? Did you yell "I'm a Hunter and I'm gonna shoot you" before you pulled the trigger?

Get over it..... Its ALL Hunting

There used to be a video out with two guys that went to Canada and used boar spears to kill a couple of black bears from tree stands. I think it was called out on a limb, it was a prmo video for a brand of tree stand. Getting back to ones roots might be nice but going through something's digestive tract might end all the fun.
