Hogs and Dogs

Went out hog hunting this weekend with my brother and some friends. We got a couple nice ones. All hogs were caught using blackmouth curs and a single pit bull for catching. They were then dispatched with a knife.

The first one was a sow about 200 pounds. This pic is from later back at the house.

I also ran this little guy down and caught him by hand. He later escaped.

The last one of the day was a big boar about 250 pounds. He put the hurt'n on a couple of dogs before my brother and I were able to get him flipped over. I ended the fight with my trusty bowie.

Excellent! Hog hunting behind dogs (with a knife?) is on my to-do list for sure. Thanks for the report and pictures!

There are plenty of places here in Texas that do it. It shouldn't be too hard to find one if your serious. As far as the knife goes, most dog owners don't want any guns around their dogs. These dogs can be worth thousands of dollars and with all the running around, thick brush, and adrenaline, it would be real easy to accidentally hit one of them. I don't believe you need an out of state hunting license either if you don't have a gun with you. That will save you about $250. Catching the hog by hand is relatively easy once you get the hang of it. Once you have a hind leg and flip if over on its side, you just use your body weight to hold it down. After that, the knife part is just a formality.

I've shot a lot with pistols, rifles, muzzleloaders, and bows. That's why I'm interested in chasing them with dogs and knives. I love to watch dogs work, and stickin' a pig they caught seems to be perfect culmination of their efforts. I'll get around to it... Probably after I get my kids hooked on shooting hogs though!

Hunt is defined as "to capture, trap, take, or kill, and includes any attempt to capture, take or kill".

So you will need a license, but you can get a non-resident special hunting (season) for $125, or a non-resident 5 day special for $45 that is good for predators, hogs, exotics, javalina, game birds (except turkey), squirrel and alligator.

Thanks for the clerification YH. I should have looked into that. I know better.

That is awesome!
You need to put alot of trust in that bulldog I'd imagine...

Complete trust. They are the muscle that keeps the hog off of you. The other dogs pile on once he catches but it's the bulldog that seals the deal. Once they lock on, it's usually over.

RayB,
I've done a lot of crazy stuff with some pretty tough animals ie...badgers, coyotes, black bears, cape buffalo, and even a rhino (in South Africa), but I just can't see myself grabbing a wild boar by the leg. You guys that kill those things with knives are all officially crazier than I am! Dang cool to see the pictures though.
