homeade decoy?

the noobie

New member
im looking to make a homeade decoy just something to keep the coyotes eyes away from me because my e-call doesnt have a remote (old foxpro model 48) so it has to be right at my side.

i was thinking just taking a cat toy giving it a little bit better of a handle and sticking in the ground.?

i dont want to mess around with making my own motorized one just something cheap and attention getting.

maybe just a big ball of marabou feathers?

Turkey feather on a 1 ft. length on thread, of an old arrow shaft works great.

Just stick it in the ground, and let the wind work for you.

or what about a fox or coyote tail? maybe cut one off clean it up and make it nice so it dont start to stink or anything and then use it instead of a feather?

Personally I wouldn`t worry about it unless you are going to be in the open. If your hunting roads or wood areas may not need one.

go to varmintal's website and look at his plans for the weazel ball. Work's like a charm. cost $8.00 at cracker barrel and $3.00 extra for misc. at hardware store.

It's always been my belief that predators are more tuned into things that they have eaten before and a feather, even though moving among leaves or tree branches,,grabs their attention as a potential meal when coupled with the distress sound of another animal..

I almost always use two Turkey wing feathers hanging from a branch just to try to get their attention away from my location..

Another thing I use once in a while is a $5 fake coon skin child's cap that I picked up in a store's toy section and stick it about grass top high where the wind/breeze will catch it..

i seen tis somewhere i cant remember try using an old cd tie it to an arrow just like the feather and turn it around so the shiny side will move in the sunlight .

I would also suggest using a dried squirrel tail with the same setup as the feather. I think it looks similair to rabbit fur essecially a gray squirrel. Just gives them something to look at similair to the sound they are hearing.

I have made a few decoys, I like the battery operated ones. I will put a decoy in a bush or under a down tree where there is open area. The decoys I work up are from animated toys, like a toy dog. First remove the annoying part and replace it with a MP3 player, amp and speaker. Now you have something that looks injured and squeals.
