Homemade Critter Gitter Decoy

Thanks, my buddy did do a fine job.

Wondering what other critter decoys people use, especially homemade ones. I plan on doing a homemade bird out of turkey feathers next.

That's a real good point on the noise factor... if so, maybe find a way to muffle the sound i.e. different container for the motor and controls or tinkering with the motor itself. Heck only $15 down if it doesn't work, but a guy in Washington state implies it does.

Here's the Walmart SmartyCat Loco Motion review below:

I found this to be a very useful base from which to build a decoy to hunt predators with. I hung a different lure from the mast, and use the motion to hold the attention of approaching predators, such as coyotes and bobcats. It is light, and has an adjustable movement rate that meets my unusual needs. As a bonus, it has a shut-off timer that helps keep track of time spent hunting at that location (at least in 15 minute increments).

I think the coyote tail may keep quite a few coyotes from wanting to come in close to the decoy. I have had pretty good luck using bird decoys compared to the bigger fury toppers with big tails.

In the above picture I was using a bird decoy I made out of packing foam and feathers I bought a Wal-Mart. We have lots of noisy Scrub Jays that are blue and that is what I tried to copy with my decoy topper.

Here is the bird decoy in action. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

In the areas I hunt the small rabbit topper on my Foxpro Jack In The Box Decoy works much better than the bigger topper with the coon tail on it.

I would definitely make a few small toppers out of feathers and try them also.

Thanks... can't wait to test it. Maybe coon, yote tails and such will work better here in the heavily wooded Kentucky knobs vice out in the open West as your excellent photos imply. I definitely want to add a rabbit critter too... Thanks for the info.

i made i with the weasle ball. it looks like its chasing a ball. it works great iv damped the sound a bit using a very small faom minnow bucket and a rod up through kinda like the jack in the box

Any suggestions on decoy critters?

Check out the local drug stores for cat toys. I found 3 or 4 that would work for around $3 each. If you've got motor noise problems, try using double-sided foam tape or a piece of thin foam to isolate the motor from the base so it can't act like a resonator. I used a hot-glue gun to mount mine.

+1 on what Evil Lurker says.. There is a brand called "SmartyKat" that makes assorted sizes of cat toys with feathers and they look pretty good on a fishing line, or on a motorised Decoy. Good luck !

Roger that... I'll be experimenting with a little bit of everything, thanks for the foam tape suggestion. The whole purpose of this is to get a video, hopefully with impact shot also. Got the call sequence down that they bite on with surprising regularity as I took 3 in the same area using female invitation followed by Varmint Al's 16min sequence.
