---Homemade Motorized Case Trimmer???---

I got a wild hair today and think that I'm going to try to make my own motorized case trimmer. I've wanted a Giruad trimmer for a long time but just can't fork out that much cash...


My plan is to buy one of these (or something similar):

I'll take out the motor and (hopefully figure out a way to) hook it up to one of these:

Then I'll build a little stand/box for it so that I can mount it to the holes I already have in my bench.


Lastly, I want to buy these in a couple different calibers:

What do you guys think? Will it work? I have no doubts that I can build a really neat little mount/box for it but my electrical skills are ZERO. I'm just not sure how I would hook up the speed controller or how I could rig something up to slow the drill down a little...

I run the lee trimmers. I have it in a drill.

I've thought about this a little more and I'm not going to build it. I don't think it would save me much time.

The actual trimming would be quicker but then I would still have to chamfer/debur and wipe off the lube. By the time I do that, it will have taken just as long as my current set up.

I think I'm going to do something like this instead:


I won't do the foot petal but I'll figure out how to rig up a little mount and switch so I don't have to juggle the drill!
 
Guess I don't reload as much as most, have a Lee Zip - trim and really like it. No motors, or electricity required. Just a few quick pulls on the zip rope and your done. Have seen a lot of people over use the neck / case bevel tool, before they realize it they have put too much pressure on the tool and they have shortened there brass by several thousandths. Especially not good if you were going to try and crimp your rds. ( which i do not do). Have used my zip - trim on several thousand rds and so far no issues. Just my 2 cts .........
 
Try a sewing machine motor. I bought one awhile back when i was building calls all the time. Now im incorperating it into my case trimmer.

I see Lee has a new trim die setup that chamfers and deburrs at the same time. I believe it's like 20 bucks total with the appropriate die. I'm thinking about picking one up, and then later motorizing it. I do believe if it works like it says it does, that would be about as close to a Giraud as a guy could get without spendin over 50 bucks or so.
 
^ I haven't seen that before but it looks awesome! You should keep us up to date if you decide to go with it. I have no idea how one would go about motorizing it but that would be pretty sweet!
 
Blopez, I'm thinking just remove the crank handle that I imagine is only held on by a screw, then screwing a small pulley to it for a belt drive. That, or possibly an inline drive system like the power Trim pro uses.... Hmmm, ill throw one on my next order just to experiment.
 
I used a 90 rpm gear motor to run my RCBS trimmer. Had to build a slide assembly for it and used a rubber hose to couple them together.
